Now Open: Oddfellows, Barrio, Monsoon East

Posted by on Fri, Dec 19, 2008 at 4:48 PM

As of 4 p.m., the hotly anticipated Oddfellows Cafe + Bar on Capitol Hill, run by Linda Derschang (Linda's, King's Hardware, Smith) and Ericka Burke (Volunteer Park Cafe), is open for business. Derschang's a kick-ass businesswoman, and Burke's a kick-ass chef—hence the hot anticipation. The menu is here [update! Thanks so much for kindly apprising me of the link issue, dear commenters]. [Update! Bonus "a.m." menu.] My friend Rob is there right now—via the free wifi he says:

Here I am. Customer #3. Drinking a perfectly lovely glass of Cotes du Rhone and waiting for some awesome-sounding beef stew.

Good god, I will die in this place.

Likewise, as of a week or so ago, a couple blocks from Oddfellows, Barrio is open. Barrio is brought to you by the Purple people; the big, glamorous Purple downtown has a two-story steel wine rack that holds 5,000 bottles. One of the Purple people discusses the new place's regrettable name here ("I believe in the name.... It's a beautiful word, especially in light of our location in a neighborhood.... I realize that it can mean ghetto"). Barrio looks very posh from a walk-by and they've staffed the bar with some serious pros.

And also as of a week or so ago, Bellevue's dining scene just got a lot better with Monsoon East.

Why the hell did you put a link to a pdf after a jump? That's the stupidest thing you've ever done.

Wow, that is so not the stupidest thing she's ever done. Seriously, wow, she's made some really bad choices. But: good point! You are an internet genius.

Seriously, Linda - you're going to open Odd Fellows at 7:00 a.m. EVERY DAY - and you don't have a BREAKFAST MENU?

WTF?!?

Where are the eggs? The biscuits? The BACON????

The one thing CapHill has been DYING for is a decent Monday - Friday BREAKFAST JOINT. All this other stuff is just hoitey-toitey yuppie swill.

You can do BETTER than this. I KNOW you CAN.

@Comte it's a coffee shop in the AM, those people wait around for 2 hours with just a latte. Imagine if you gave them a meal, they'd never leave..

oddfellows' food looks enticing, but the menu design gave me a seizure.

i am not impressed by faux-weathering (reminds me of 1990's abercrombie jeans) and "sporadic" caps lock interspersed with lower case. it just looks like it's trying too hard.

"Especially in light of our location..." WTF!? Capitol Hill is the farthest thing from a barrio, unless one of these yupsters hauls a glock out of their Coach bag and starts bucking fools for putting soy milk in their latte when they asked for rice.

Hang on - we do have breakfast. There is a daytime menu and an after 5 menu. We will be serving Marscapone & pear stuffed brioche french toast, Baked eggs with ham & spinach, homemade oatmeal plus we are baking muffins, scones, and cookies daily. It's not and eggs and bacon sort of breakfast like Linda's brunch but it will be yummy. We won't start serving breakfast till Monday though as we didn't receive all of our orders due to the weather. Breakfast will be served till 5pm daily and sandwiches, salads and the rest of the menu will be served till midnight daily. We also have outlets to plug into, Wi-fi and Stumptown coffee.

Yay, BREAkFAST!

Now, THAT'S what I'm talkin' about!

Thanks, Linda. I may check it out Monday a.m. - assuming you've got power, of course.

@9:

It's not the snow per se, it's the incessant whiners, and the idiot drivers fucking things up for the buses that is driving me to consternation.

Its nice to see a menu that takes quality comfort food seriously. That's my kind of place. But, yeah, hard to read.

$3.50 for an americano?! I mean, I understand that you didn't have the guts to actually publish that ridiculousness on any of your menus, but do you still think you can getaway with that kind of pricing? Hopefully it doesn't affect the baristas' tips too much, as I doubt they're sharing in the ridiculous profits being made off that cup of water and espresso bean.
