Cable Trouble

Posted by Eli Sanders on Fri, Dec 19, 2008 at 9:45 AM

Bad news for our readers in Egypt:

CAIRO, Egypt - Egypt's communications ministry says Internet cables in the Mediterranean Sea have been cut, causing massive Internet outages.

The ministry says three Internet cables running through the Mediterranean were cut Friday morning. Throughout the country the Internet is almost completely down or working sporadically.

A reminder that we're all but a few snips of a cable away from returning to the pre-Internet darkness.

Why does this always happen with many cables at once? I never hear about one cable being cut. It's always 3 or more. And eventually they say 'boat anchors' cut them all in the same day, in locations hundreds of miles apart.

Not to mention the fact that they're buried and reinforced...

Not to be contrary or anything, but we here in North America probably aren't that close to the "pre-internet darkness", given that most web sites are hosted in the US, especially the ones we're interested in.

I had my laptop in "the shop" for 2 days longer than it should have been because of the snow days and I was dying from net withdrawal. I missed the Slog the most, of course. :D
