Scary Christmas!

Posted by on Wed, Dec 17, 2008 at 11:16 AM

This has to be worse than any old sign an atheist group might want to put up—right?

An Ohio police chief said photos of local sex offenders are adorning his department's Christmas tree as a way of identifying them to the public.

North Baltimore Police Chief Alan Baer said pictures of the eight registered sex offenders in the community of about 3,000 people adorn paper cutouts of stars and other shapes on the rotating artificial tree, The Findlay (Ohio) Courier reported Wednesday. The top and bottom of the tree explain the decor, with ribbons reading: "North Baltimore sex offenders."

"I just wanted to raise awareness for the public," Baer said. "We have a lot of foot traffic that comes in and out of here. So I thought this would be a unique way to get their attention" about local sex offenders.

Maybe sex offenders could pull Santa's sleigh in North Baltimore's Thanksgiving Day Parade next year?

How about a manger with sex offenders. Put pictures of sex offender's faces over the faces of J. M. and J. plus the three kings. Even over the animals faces. That should give Bill O. and his retarded friends a stroke. That would give double points for doing civic duty.

Are they doing this as a way of kids seeing and later recognizing sex offenders so they no to run away. Are these just pedophiles, or would this include a picture of an 18 year old high school senior who had sex with his 16 year old girlfriend?

And is the population of the town 3,000, with a total of 8 sex offenders in the community? Or are there 3,000 sex offenders in the community and these are just 8 of them?

Who, exactly, is the police departments foot traffic? People being booked? "Any of these fella's share your cell, you know what to do." Or are kids actually coming in, learning to be terrified of Christmas tress?

Right, I'm sure this will be effective. Because I know so many people who go to police HQ and stare at the tree for hours.

*would this include a picture of an 18 year old high school senior who had sex with his 16 year old girlfriend?*

That was my thought, too. Maybe we watch too much tee-vee, but it seems a lot of people end up on the sex offender list, who aren't.

So, yep, I find the tree scary. An invitation to do violence...

Dammit, I have got to get out of this state. I swear to god every story I read about Ohio makes me more embarrassed to live here.

Should a police department even have a Christmas tree? I mean, isn't that an endorsement of religion by the state, prohibited by the 1st and 14th Amendments?

And in any event, wouldn't Hannukah be the better holiday? There are 8 days of Hannukah, and 8 offenders. Instead of lighting candles, they could set one of those guys on fire each night in a public ceremony.

Now THAT would raise awareness, and I bet their foot traffic would even increase!
