Hearts and Minds

Posted by Dan Savage on Tue, Dec 16, 2008 at 10:01 AM

Hey, I know—the man is an instant hero to millions of people in Iraq and all across the Arab world. Tens of thousands of people are demonstrating in the streets right now, praising his actions, calling for his release. So what do you say we beat the fuck out of him?

The Iraqi journalist who threw his shoes at George Bush has been beaten in custody, his brother said today.

Muntadhar al-Zaidi suffered a broken hand, broken ribs, internal bleeding and an eye injury, his older brother, Dargham, told the BBC. He has since been handed over to the Iraqi judiciary, a step that normally heralds a criminal case.

Okay! Good job, everybody! Our work here is done!

I estimate this poor fellow's lifespan to be (TIME IN PUBLIC EYE) + (ABOUT FIVE MINUTES).

His brother says he's been beaten? Confirmation from a less biased source would be nice.

Well, at least he lives in a free country, right? If Saddam were still in power, he might've...ummm...been beaten even harder, or something.

@2 Well then the Bush administration better start letting the International Red Cross start monitoring how we treat the prisoners, eh? Oh wait, we deny them access. I wonder why? It couldn't be so we can abuse prisoners, could it?

Either way, why trust a source if he might be one of few outsiders allowed to communicate with the prisoner. I'm sure just any stranger can call him up or visit him.

I agree that a less biased source would be admirable, but we pretty much lost the right to complain about erroneous tales of abuse when we stopped allowing international observers from monitoring.

Next stop, GITMO, for waterboarding and other illegal tortures - or extradition to another nation for even more heinous tortures we can pretend we don't do.

I think we're starting to see the true measure of the bravery of his action now. If he survives being treated at the U.S. military hospital this report mentions, his cool will be as permanent as it gets these days.

The guy is a major folk hero now in Iraq and the Middle East. He won't fade from memory in that part of the world any time soon.

Is this an example of the peaceful and freedom-loving Iraq we went to war to achieve?

Awesome!

That article says Iraqi security beat him, not the Secret Service or the US military. And the crime he would be charged with is not one that comes from US law. Bush has done a lot of crappy things, but this isn't one that you can lay on him.

SF Gal, Iraq is a US puppet regime, so yeah we're responsible.

@9 Also, please explain why Bush isn't publicly calling for leniency or condemning the brutality. McKinley did it for the guy who successfully assassinated him, for god's sake.

This is all Bush' fault.

If Bush thinks this guys actions were "democratic", then perhaps he'll have the heart to pardon him along with Cheney and Rumsfeld - their crimes being the hurling of Hush Puppies encrusted with dog shit at the American public.

I wouldn't trust the gossip oriented arab street. Just common sense.

Nothing like a good old-fashioned American beating. Maybe next they can get trashed on Miller High Life and whip him with a belt.

"the man is an instant hero to millions of people in Iraq and all across the Arab world"

Aren't you forgetting the rest of the world?

Yeah, I gotta say, we're kind of enjoying watching it on Youtube up here in my corner of the world.
