As I wrote on Friday, this week's Seattle Poetry Chain is a double link. Sarah Mangold chose both John and Roberta Olson as the next poet in the chain. On Friday, I ran John Olson's poem. Today, we run Roberta Olson's.
Roberta Olson is the author of a chapbook titled All These Fair and Flagrant Things, and her work has appeared in many local poetry journals. She's also been anthologized far and wide. Here is her poem for the Poetry Chain:
The Road Seldom Lies OpenOld women of light
In fertile river valleys
This valley might be home
It is made of earth and absolute
Moments when the sun's cave is raw
When the mountains are brittle
The land shifts by drought
Scratched by boothills
Egypt where anyone
Goes slower by their watches
I must admit, this is my first encounter with her work, but I'm really fond of her voice. You can find more work by Roberta Olson here and more work by Roberta and John Olson here.
Many thanks to the Olsons for their contributions, and we'll see their choice for the next link in the Poetry Chain on Friday at noon.
