Reading Today

Posted by Paul Constant on Sun, Dec 14, 2008 at 10:06 AM

An open mic and one event today. Up at the University Village Barnes and Noble, Vincenza Scarpini signs and reads from The Journey of the Italians in America. One of the saddest things about Seattle, in my opinion, is that it doesn't have a Little Italy. I wrote about that in the Chow section over a year ago.

And that's it. Happy Christmas shopping, everyone.

The full readings calendar, including the next week or so, is here.

I think it used to be one - early in the last century. There were so many Italians living in the Rainier Valley, around the vicinity of where the Loew's is now, they used to call it "Garlic Gulch".

Misprint in your review, Paul? It places Da Pino's on Rainier Ave, but the title says it's on NE 65th St. in Ravenna. Did they move to the neighborhood of Zeek's and Osaka?
Don't play with my stomach like that.

Here's one of the saddest things about Seattle: people assume that it's okay to use cheddar for mozzarella and cottage cheese for ricotta because it "tastes the same to them".

Don't feel bad, Seattle - New York doesn't really have a Little Italy anymore either. Chinatown swallowed it up years ago. I think there's a block or two of token Italian restaurants that are protected by some sort of historical designation - basically a tourist trap.

When you take I-90 from I-5 across to the Mt Baker tunnel, you are basically driving over Seattle's Little Italy in part of that drive. Much of what was left of it was destroyed in I-90 construction.

Oberto's and Borrachini's on Rainier are remnants of the Italian presence in the Rainier Valley.
