The Stranger Is Expanding Our Circulation on the Eastside

Posted by on Thu, Dec 11, 2008 at 1:40 PM

It's not always easy to find a copy of the print edition of The Stranger in Bellevue, Issaquah, Kirkland, and Redmond. But we're expanding our distribution to those areas. We've got some ideas, but we want to know from you, too: Where do our readers in Bellevue, Issaquah, Kirkland, and Redmond think we should put Stranger boxes?

There's one right in front of my building, one across the street and another one in front of California Pizza Kitchen. 3 in 1 block seems like enough to me.

Umm...how about one in Ellensburg? Some of us work/live/spend a lot of time in both places. And we're not all honkies. (Just mostly. Mostly honkies.) I'm sure the Punch folks would bring a couple bundles back this way every week.

No? Okay.

:( Don't worry about me, I'll be working in Seattle again soon enough, at which point I'll change my handle to "Renton Mike".

Put them at the Transit Stations in Bellevue TC and Overlake TC near Microsoft. It would be nice to also have them at the entrances to the different grocery store entrances, especially those not directly downtown, but rather in outlying Bellevue locations like CrossRoads Mall (several good ideas for places there btw), EastGate Albertson's etc..

Awesome!

2. In front of Stan's BBQ.
3. At the two Issaquah Park & Rides.

@9 Excatly!

Why don't you publish it as a PDF on the website?

Or use a flash based reader.

Can you add some more delivery sites in Northgate and Lake City while you are at it? How about a box at 125th and 15th?

I think the Kirkland Library already has them, but what about someplace down near the waterfront? I think there are newspaper boxes in front of George's Place.

There's a college called DigiPen near the Nintendo offices in Redmond.

http://maps.google.com/maps?q=digipen&ie…

I'd place one around there: you'd get some college kids + Nintendo employees, both of whom want to feel cool and read about other people's sex lives or light rail or Amanda Knox.

The Overlake Transit Center is a good idea! And the Microsoft Issaquah/Sammamish campus. I'd also probably read the Stranger at the Issaquah Brewhouse while giving the patrons the stinkeye.

Oh and the WWU campus definitely needs a box or two

In front of the Starbucks at 140th & Bel-Red. The Trader Joe's at 156th & Northup would be good too.

Also, just inundate all of Kemper Freeman's properties.

In front of KC Foods (or whatever it's called now, hell I don't remember...) in Issy. The kids all hang there. Or by the Issaquah skate park.

I think 5 in on to something.
Shove them up staffers' asses and post them in strategic locations.
Readers could pull the paper out and another would drop into its place, like an upside down kleenex dispenser.

On Lake Washington blvd near Kahili and the B of A in downtown Kirkland. Also in the Kirkland TC in downtown if you don't already have one there.

At the corner of 108th Avenue NE & NE 4th street...busy downtown intersection

Inside/In front of Civica Office Commons and City Center Bellevue, near the Transit Center...both of which have coffee shops and small convenience stores inside of them, and as such are high foot-traffic areas

Newport Hills PnR. The 167 to UW stops here. College students love your paper. I'm a yuppie that enjoys it too. Do it for the students, not the yuppie.

I second the Overlake Transit center (though I feel like there may already be a box there?) and the bus stops on 148th by 51st (right by Microsoft Red West.) Also, Redmond Town Center someplace (might already be there, though?) Is there a box at Bridle Trails shopping center by the Starbucks or the market? Or the bus shelter across the street from there.

If I want to pick up a print edition, I usually get mine at Crossroads.

@8, 18, and 25: If you venture across the street to the Issaquah Library, there's always a stack of Strangers in there. That's where I got my fix when I was a teenager. There's also usually a stack at Soundsations, but it goes pretty quickly.

Definitely put some at the Eastside P&Rs-- if you're stuck waiting for a bus, I'd rather read the Stranger than the Weekly or some stupid rental magazine.

Could you take all the extra copies you dump throughout Seattle to jack up your circulation rates and distribute them on the East side? Would save some trees...
Posted by Trevor on December 11, 2008 at 3:21 PM

Also you can make your first cover story about how the Stranger wants to cut all the "underutilized" bus service to the East Side.

Jesus, thanks for all the ideas.

A lot of private properties (strips, grocery stores, etc.) generally won't allow boxes on their property, and no one is gonna go to the front corner of a huge parking lot to grab a paper in my experience.

-- we are at the Bellevue Transit Center. 2 Boxes.
-- we're inside the Issaquah Brew house. But I am eyeing a couple of spots for boxes in downtown Issaquah.
-- we used to be at Overlake. They had everyone pull their boxes when they remodeled and then haven't allowed anyone (free) back in. "Private-Public partnership" has 'private property' as leverage to deny access.
-- we're inside Crossroads Mall in several locations. Try the racks at the newsstand.
-- we used to have one at the Newport Hills P&R and it didn't really do that well. We're at that shopping center thingee place in Newport Hills.

Thanks for the suggestions! (A lot of people like the pulp better than the pixels...) I'm leaving a lottery ticket stuck to the ceiling of each new box we put out at a suggested location. ; )

could you get The Stranger to Olympia before Friday ??!!

seriously, I enjoy reading the print edition, and it just does NOT make sense that it comes out on Wednesday in Seattle, is in Tacoma by Thursday, and does not appear in Olympia until sometime on Friday afternoon.

#39 sort of answered my question, i.e. "Can you get it in Olympia/Lacey?" I don't live there anymore, but if I decided to move back there, I would want to get it (though I actually read it on line 99.9% of the time. I think there should be several places on the Evergreen Campus, and, if these businesses it still exist, outside Rainy Day Records in West Olympia and outside Batdorf & Bronson coffee, The Spar, and the Eastside Tavern downtown.

Ohhh you could also put it at the 545 bus stop that the Nintendo people use...it's right off the 50th exit in Redmond. Those people would prolly love to have a box there.

Why doesn't The Stranger charge a small fee for paper. It would cut waste tremendously. It's amazing how much you advocate the paper bag fee yet run your business with reckless regard for conservation. Free newspapers should never be regulated or outlawed, of course, but it would be nice if you took some responsibility instead of encouraging so much wasted paper.

Sorry "dick face" was a little harsh. Maybe put some boxes in the middle of the 405 off-ramps in Bellevue to thwart all the people going to the mall. Seriously the city would love you.

Having the stranger at some locations in Juanita/Finn Hill/Kenmore would be awesome. Not sure if you do distribution in grocery stores but the Finn Hill QFC, Kenmore Safeway, or the Safeway at NE 137th and 100th NE would be awesome.

For street boxes the Juanita Village area and the intersection of Bothell way and 68th NE would be good.

Sadly much of the Eastside doesn't really have good box locations on public property, damn them and their auto-centric lifestyle! At the very least any Eastside branches of your advertisers should be encouraged to carry copies in their locations.
