Looks like Jesse Jackson Jr. was "Candidate 5".

Ouch.

Chicago politics has a notorious reputation. This worried me during Obama's presidential campaign. It seems to me, to be politically successful in Chicago and the state of Illinois without at least a hairline connection to something or some one scandalous or corruptive would be a miracle. Sad. What is next? The Oprah connection?

@5 - actually, it means Obama has been tested - repeatedly - and not given in to the forces of darkness.

As opposed to Comrade Bush who reveled in it.

I think he's purdy tainty already...

Obama now says "I had no contact with the governor or his office and so we were not, I was not aware of what was happening."

Never mind that KHQA-TV reported on November 5, 2008 that: "Now that Barack Obama will be moving to the White House, his seat in the U.S. Senate representing Illinois will have to be filled. That's one of Obama's first priorities today. He's meeting with Governor Rod Blagojevich this afternoon in Chicago to discuss it."

And that on November 23, 2008, his senior adviser David Axelrod said something quite different on national TV: "I know he's talked to the governor and there are a whole range of names many of which have surfaced, and I think he has a fondness for a lot of them."

It's unbelievable that Obama is not lying now.

If Bush or Cheney tried shit like this the media (and especially SLOG) would be raking them over the coals.

Never mind the stink that the Left would be sending up if the same scenario were unfolding around McCain's seat if he had won...

YGTBKM, you have posted the exact same thing in three threads already. We get it. We are all interested to see what Obama's role in this was, but for right now, there is essentially no information to go on except the fact that it seems that the Obama's administration did not want to play ball with Blagojevich and would only offer "appreciation" if he appointed the preferred candidate.

The initial "stink" that is being sent up is focused on Blagojevich, not Obama, because (1) Blago was known to be a corrupt slimeball long before this and (2) nothing in the affidavit even hints that there was any wrongdoing on Obama's part.

If the situation were reversed and it were McCain (with no hint of any wrongdoing on his part to date), I think there would be even more focus on the governor vs. the president-elect, since Janet Napolitano is not already known to be a corrupt slimeball.

This headline is completely sensational. We'll find out whether or not Obama met with Blago regarding the Senate seat, but who cares?
Politico reports:
According to the complaint, Blagojevich weighed a stark quid-pro-quo – he’d appoint a top Obama adviser only if Obama would in turn name Blagojevich secretary of health and human services. The criminal complaint makes clear the Obama adviser is Valerie Jarrett, who was an early contender for the Senate seat. She was then tapped as a top White House aide.

When Blagojevich was spurned, he went after Obama in expletive-laced conversations with the governor’s top aides and his wife.

Sounds like a complete exoneration of Obama to me.

So how could Obama "spurn" him AND have "no contact with the governor or his office"?

Why the lies?

"I had no contact with him but I turned him down"????

All I want to know is what did Obama know and when did he know it?

And again... why lies now?

(Seems very suspicious).

Wouldn't it have been better (more presidential), if he had actually "spurned" him to say something along the lines of "I was approached by the Governor, I turned him down and contacted the special prosecutor immediately"?

@14: The Politico article does not say that Obama met with Blago and spurned him in person. It says Blago was spurned. Obama does have one or two people working for him these days, and I imagine on occasion they are gracious enough to make a few phone calls on his behalf.

@ 14,

You can "spurn" someone via telephone, e-mail, and text message, also Facebook & MySpace are viable options for "spurning" rather in person. I'm sure Obama's secretary "spurned" Blagojevich's secretary. Actual, face to face "spurning" probably didn't happen.

@16

Yes.... but all those options require some level of contact. Contact that Obama assures us that neither he, nor his office, had with the Governor or his office.

And it would also require a level of awareness. Awareness that Obama also assures us neither he nor his office had.

Tainty, tainty, tainty.
