Listen in on KUOW's The Conversation, where Cary Moon, People's Waterfront Coalition cofounder and a proponent of the surface/transit option to replace the Alaskan Way Viaduct, Gene Hoaglund, a retired electrician who backs the elevated option, and an as-yet-unnamed supporter of a waterfront tunnel will be debating the viaduct replacement options. Want fodder for defending your preference? Check out evaluations of the impacts of each option on the economy, open space, and pedestrian connectivity on the state department of transportation's web site.

I'm disappointed that all 8 options cost West Seattle transit users anywhere from 50 to 100 percent additional time to get from Alaska Junction to 3rd & University (typical from-to locations). How is adding anywhere from 15 to 25 minutes per trip (depending on which scenario) an efficient transit system. I can't believe that anyone on the Stakeholder Committee is even considering going forward with any of these 8 options since all 8 do not provide efficient transit modes for one-fifth of Seattle residents. Something needs to be done with the transit options in all 8 of these scenarios - or whichever 2 or 3 survive. Saying that transit is now competitive with private vehicle use because the time for private vehicle use will go up so dramatically is not really a solution - yes, POV times will be horrible - but so will transit times and that IS UNACCEPTABLE UNDER ANY CIRCUMSTANCES.

Chas, West Seattle was going to be screwed six ways to Sunday no matter what.

And nobody, quite frankly, IS going to do anything about it.

That said, I stand by what they read from me on the show.

It's Hoglund, not Hoaglund, Erica. How about using some minimum reporting skills and verifying the spelling of people's names? Is it too much for you?

i hope Cary pointed out that no matter which option is chosen, during 4-5 years of construction, THERE WILL BE NO VIADUCT. and people will learn to cope.

And that during the 5-7 years of construction (6-9 if a tunnel) we literally have to DOUBLE transit use within four blocks and get rid of parking on most N-S streets to cope anyway.

Might as well just do surface plus transit.
