Happy Yuletide Holiday Fun Time

Posted by Dominic Holden on Mon, Dec 8, 2008 at 9:53 AM

Alki Tours is offering a Christmas-themed train ride to a wonderland of holiday cheer:

A magical day awaits as we board the Christmas Train bound for Tacoma. With bells ringing and carolers singing were sure to be seeing St. Nick on the train. ... Then Santa and his elves whisk you away to Pt. Defiance Zoo to rendezvous with the reindeer. giant_spider.jpgDelight in the dazzling display of half a million colored lights shimmering in the night. See the huge replica of Mt. Rainier and cross through a myriad of lights into a dreamland of giant spiders! In the early evening our magical train whistles in and carries us home.

Dazzling lights, adorable elves, festive tunes, and... GIANT SPIDERS! Since when did Christmas fun-lands involve giant spiders? I understand that many adults don't feel strongly one way or another toward giant spiders—some of us fear them—but kids are a little more impressionable when it comes to giant spiders. And nothing is more terrifying than being caught in holiday-cheer mode, and then—WHAM!—giant spiders. That could seriously fuck your kids up.

I was wondering when you were going to find this. A WONDERLAND OF GIANT SPIDERS. I've been saying this to myself all weekend. It's given me David Bowie song earworm.

If it doesn't kill them, it will make them stronger, and more psychotic.

I always got giant spiders in my stocking Christmas morning. We would laugh and laugh and then head to the emergency room where we'd sing carols and get our wounds sewn up. What joy!

I have a very strong memory of going to Storyland in New Hampshire as a little kid and getting the bejesus scared out of me by the giant spider in the Little Miss Muffet exhibit. My parents have a picture of this happening, too. Which is great. Just great.

So, parents, if you take your kids on this magical journey, make sure you take pictures when they're having a spider-induced meltdown so you can share the happy memories with them later.

But they're Christmas Spiders!

Wearing little red booties on all eight legs and a santa hat!

That makes all the difference ...

I for one welcome our new arachno-holiday overlords.
