The Malling of America

Posted by Eli Sanders on Thu, Dec 4, 2008 at 10:32 AM

More mall—the flat, grassy kind—for the inauguration, according to the Presidential Inaugural Committee:

In keeping with its pledge to make the inauguration of President-elect Barack Obama one of the most open and accessible in history, the Presidential Inaugural Committee (PIC) announced today that, for the first time, the entire length of the National Mall will be opened to the public so that more people than ever before will be able to witness the swearing-in of the President from a vantage point in sight of the Capitol.

This means, basically, that those who can't get official tickets or press passes will have more spots to stand in for free. Which is a good thing for an event that's expected to draw more people than, maybe, ever.

A chicken in every pot and a car in every garage – Herbert Hoover.

And a high-def, flat-screen TV on every tree in the Mall...

@2 - just be quiet and watch one of the giant Jumbotron screens placed along the length of the mall.

Or go drink in a bar if you want a closer look.
