Art on the Front Page

Posted by on Wed, Dec 3, 2008 at 11:38 AM

The New York Times put these illustrations of the reluctant-to-sit-for-his-official-portrait Mario Cuomo on the front page this morning.

cuomo.480.jpg

I like the so-called Picasso interpretation on the far right the best as a standalone image (all are by illustrator Thomas Fuchs). The others, left to right, are homages to Mondrian, Crumb, and Warhol. But none of these really captures the charismatic and smooth but still somehow pleasantly frumpy guy who was my childhood governor. I also remember him as a hothead. I'm going with El Greco for El Mario.

In any case, MYO Mario portrait here.

If only the Democrats had run him in 1984 instead of Mondale. Sigh...

Gov Schwarzenegger gets a gory Goya. Francis Bacon for Jesse Ventura.

Ah, yes. Our childhood governor! Our hearts never forget, do we?

I remember him looking a little haggard towards the end, but I still perked up a little after I saw him.

@1: He kind of guaranteed New York state a republican governor for the next 12 years after his time in office, so I'm not sure how well that would have worked.

Those Crumb and Warhol "interpretations" look like lazy Photoshop filter jobs.
