Tonight, Starring Jen Graves

Posted by Brendan Kiley on Tue, Dec 2, 2008 at 4:37 PM

Tonight, at 7, at SAM, Jen Graves will moderate a panel discussion about two-ness, twininity, and duality with artists Adam Satushek, Perri Lynch, and Allan Packer. They're part of a group show called Dualities up at SAM Gallery and Cornish—two venues! get it?!—right now.

Ms. Graves will show slides (in an unguarded moment, she described her selections as "good") and discuss many things, including Adam and Eve and Olafur Eliasson's Weather Project:

The Weather Project was installed at the London's Tate Modern in 2003 as part of the popular Unilever series. The installation filled the open space of the gallery's Turbine Hall with representations of the Sun and the sky.

Eliasson used humidifiers to create a fine mist in the air via a mixture of sugar and water, as well as a semi-circular disc made up of hundreds of mono-frequency lamps which emitted pure yellow light. The ceiling of the hall was covered with a huge mirror, in which visitors could see themselves as tiny black shadows against a mass of orange light. Many visitors responded to this exhibition by lying on their backs and waving their hands. The work reportedly attracted two million visitors, many of whom were repeat customers.

Not one million, not three million, but two million. Duality!

I happened to visit the Tate Modern when that particular exhibit was on display. Eerie, I will say. Just a photo doesn't capture the sound and the space of it. Never mind the mist, which actually I didn't notice.

Anyway, the Tate is #1 on my list of places to visit again whenever someday I'm in London again.

The weather project is amazing in person, I saw it when I was in London in March 2004, pictures don't do justice to the scale of it.

Oh my freakin' gawd.

Can we please get rid of that absurd Fords Smashing Thru The Air monstrosity at SAM and have that in its place? Please?

That installation was unbelievable. It was topped only by the 'davidblaine-in-a-box' just down the Thames

How can three people at two venues represent twins, the concept of two-ness? That just doesn't work for me. The numbers don't add up.

I saw this at the Tate Modern too. Sometimes I find myself just randomly thinking about how cool it was.
