I'm Strange, Too!

Posted by on Mon, Dec 1, 2008 at 2:07 PM

Is Emily the Strange, who started as a character in a goth picture book and is now kind of the Mickey Mouse of the Hot Topic set, a knockoff of a character in the Nate the Great series of children's books from the 70's?

Here is a side-by-side comparison:

Here is a much more thorough commentary.

Does this mean Hot Topic will be sued out of existance?

Or will this just be another meaningless expose on the internet

I remember those books so fiercely, and, as I am a purveyor of Hot Topic's occasionally amusing t-shirts, I see the comparison immediately.

I used to be friends/roommates with one of the main writers for Emily the Strange. The art sure looks like a knock off, and so does that passage. But animosity aside, I would give me ex-friend the benefit of the doubt that she didn't write that passage.

Next in breaking news: character on "Jabberjaw" direct rip off of "Shaggy" from "Scooby Doo". Miss Ginter with the story in a few minutes after a traffic update.

This looks WAY more conclusive than the Nadia: The Secret of Blue Water / Atlantis: The Lost Empire controversy.

Goddamnit, I knew there was a reason I bought those shirts in junior high.

Way to exploit my subconscious memories of favorite childhood books, Hot Topic!
