Transracial Adoption and the Racism Test

Posted by on Fri, Nov 28, 2008 at 11:57 AM

A little while back I wrote briefly on Slog about transracial adoption, and now I've gone and written a full story about it.

At the end of the story I made a list of resources you might be interested in if you want to know more. I forgot to include in it a link to the Implicit Association Test—basically, a test of how racist you are, hosted on Harvard's web site. (I'm not saying it's perfect, just that it's interesting.)

A housekeeping note: There's already a conversation started in comments on the story page itself, so if you don't mind, comment here about the racism test and there about the story in general.

That was interesting. I'd never taken something like that, and have a "slight automatic preference for White people over Black people" and a "moderate automatic preference for Barack Obama over John McCain." I enjoyed getting huffy and incredulous when a red X appeared after some choices I made. Oh, I blame the hurry factor and laziness for not appearing as free of bias as I'm just so sure I am. Great post(s), Jen.

As soon as People's Court and Judge Alex are over I will take the test.

i took the test and received a moderate preference for gay people. i saw no red X appear, so perhaps i went too slowly. my gay/good match up was last, and i think the fact that i was getting better at taking the test, and more familiar with the words and images, played a slight to moderate role in the outcome. i think i'll look for the black/white test next.

My results:

a) Your data suggests a strong automatic preference for Black people over White people

b) Your data suggests a strong automatic preference for Barack Obama over John McCain

I wonder how much a was influenced by b?

93% of all blacks murdered in the USA every year are murdered by other blacks. Blacks make up only 12% of the USA, which means "crime-age" black males make up less than 6%, but somehow over 52% of all murders and over 34% of all rapes in our country are committed by that less-than-6%. Black men raped at least 37,460 white women in 2005, but in the sample survey of over 20,000 people, they found that white men raped between zero and ten black women that year. Blacks have committed the vast majority of murders in the Seattle area in the last year and most of the victims were black. Until those numbers and situations change drastically, blacks and guilty-white-liberals who whine about "white racism" can go eat shit.

Feeling happy, as a straight white young(ish) woman coming from a very racist and antisemitic place in Europe, but who has been living in the US for 8 years, because I scored "little to no automatic preference for black/white people" and "strong automatic preference for gay people". Bizarrely, I also scored "slight preference for fat people," which was NOT my conscious preference.

Kris Kime, have you also performed this analysis in terms of income and education? You'll be very shocked to learn that poor/uneducated people are responsible for an overwhelming percentage of the crimes. Does it not strike you as meaningful that all these criminals are, in your interpretation, black, and, in my interpretation, poor?

The important thing about the implicit associations test is that it only tests your innate feelings, not your behavior.
Even if you can't control your implicit feelings about other races/genders/etc. the nobility lies in acting and behaving the right way.

Hi Sceptica, I guess that explains why West Virginia, one of the poorest and whitest states, also has one of the lower crime rates in the country...

Oh yeah? I just did this little comparison between Charleston and Chicago.

Let's see:

Your statistics are as bullshit as your comments. What, pray tell, is a "crime-age" black male?

What percentage of white female murder victims are murdered by black males?

What percentage of white female rape victims are raped by black males?

Living in a 45% black/45% white neighborhood as I do, I am far more afraid of white racists than "crime age" black males.

I'm not really inclined to say that this kind of quiz is accurate for me. I took the puppy/kitty and mosquito/cockroach one. I got results as a moderate automatic preference for Cockroaches compared to Mosquitoes and a moderate automatic preference for Puppies compared to Kittens. Both are not the way I would describe myself. If I had to face a cockroach or a mosquito, I would go with the mosquito any day of the week. As for the kitten/puppy one, it is just plain wrong. I am, without a doubt, a person who STRONGLY prefers kittens over puppies. I don't like puppies all that much (I range from dislike to slight like) whereas I love kittens. Really, really love them. I'm still going to take some other tests, though, so we'll see where that goes.

There's a kittens/puppies test?

What test did I take? Mine said "Your data suggest a strong automatic preference for Fair compared to Biased."

I did it again and got:

"Your data suggest little to no automatic association between Conspiracy and Accident with True and False.

Your data suggest a slight automatic preference for Progress compared to Restore."

Is there a way to go straight to the racism test or do I have to keep taking random tests until I finally get to the right one?

I had no difference between my preference for Black or White people. This surprised and reassured me because I assumed I would prefer my own racial group. On the other hand, I had a strong automatic preference for Obama.

I will say that the second result did not surprise me at all. I found the test way harder when I was doing the McCain good test than the Obama good test.

I really hate social science research. I don't think a poorly coded version of SIMON can reliably determine my slight preference for a or b.

Also, some of the images were really low quality. I felt like I was guessing at what I was seeing throughout the gay one.
