Open Shopping Season

Posted by Dan Savage on Fri, Nov 28, 2008 at 9:11 AM

There's really no reason to leave the house on "Black Friday":

A worker died after being trampled by a throng of unruly shoppers when a suburban Wal-Mart opened for the holiday sales rush Friday, authorities said. At least three other people were injured.... Nassau County police said the 34-year-old worker was taken to a hospital where he was pronounced dead at about 6 a.m., an hour after the store opened. The cause of death was not immediately known.

A police statement said shortly after 5 a.m., a throng of shoppers "physically broke down the doors, knocking (the worker) to the ground." Police also said a 28-year-old pregnant woman was taken to a hospital for observation and three other shoppers suffered minor injuries and were also taken to hospitals.

I will pay any price (or full price), absorb any markup, if it means not having to line up outside a Wal-Mart at 5 AM with "throngs of shoppers" ready, willing, and able to trample clerks to death and injure pregnant women on their way to $300 laptops.

Motherfucking god damn motherfuckers. The worst part? People kept fucking shopping. Never mind the discount - think of how much money you save by being dead!

amen, brother.

it's pretty hard to drag me out shopping the other 364 days too, but this one day? i won't even go out for effing groceries. i would be out there with all the people in the world i understand the least, and that is a recipe for misery. forget it.

This is why I typically don't leave the house on Black Friday. The hordes of wide-eyed, frenzied consumers freaks me the fuck out.

How would they feel if we went to their place of employment next time they decide to bring back the McRib and we trample them at opening hour?

That would never have happened at Frederick & Nelson!

#6 Blame Walmart too for staying open while the bodies were carted away.

#14 The McRib is back. I saw a commercial for it a couple days ago.

Would anyone expect anything else from you, Editor Bossman? How do your employees feel?

Well - if the euthanasia law hadn't passed (or your state doesn't have one), shopping at Walmart on Black Friday might be an alternative to consider...

The dumbest thing about Black Friday is that, especially this year, prices are likely going to be discounted as much or more as the Christmas shopping season goes on.

You know what's worse than shopping on Black Friday? Getting up at 3 a.m. to report on it for the local paper.

@1
I don't blame the herd. Sure it's a sick scene, but I blame it more on the store, culture, and poverty. Are these people worse than people who can afford to shop at boutiques?

@23,

I agree with blaming the store and our country's sick culture, but poverty? Impoverished people can't afford laptops at any price.

I guess the whole stampede thing makes it hard to pinpoint a culprit, but this is fucking criminal.

We should uplift these unenlightened black people and make them see how they have been forced to behave in this manner by evil white racists.
