Mumbai, Ongoing

Posted by Christopher Frizzelle on Thu, Nov 27 at 11:45 PM

MUMBAI, India — Indian commandos slid down ropes from a hovering army helicopter Friday morning as security forces stormed a Jewish center that had been seized by terrorists during a coordinated series of attacks on Mumbai, India’s commercial and entertainment capital.

The blue-uniformed commandos landed on the roof and soon made their way inside Nariman House, home to the Orthodox Jewish group Chabad-Lubavitch. A gunbattle then broke out inside the building, with hundreds of shots being fired over the next four hours...

This shit is just horrible - first, of course for the victims, families, and the millions of nice people whose lives will be fucked up for a long time.

And second, for the fuel it gives to the Giulianis and all the other Nazi Heimatschutz (Homeland Security! 9/11! 9/11!) assholes in the US and elsewhere.

Just remember: It doesn't matter that Muslims have 4 dozen countries of their own AND are murdering people on every corner of the globe to steal 2 dozen more. They are the victim. Any hate crime they committ comes fron legit greviences while any backlash they suffer is simply a "hate crime". And if you question this you are racist and Islamaphoic. Just like anyone who questioned the rights of Germans to invade and conquer circa 1930+ were anti German.

Sam seems to have been the victim of the hate crime of brown people moving into his neighborhood.

Imperialist bastards, that's what the Middle East has always been.

My thanksgiving was a drag. I have friends, but most didn't have to work and had families within driving distance. I'm white and I had to work on Thanksgiving! Heresy! Seattle Sucks! Let it be the next place for a natural disaster!

"Imperialist bastards"? Of course let's ignore the LONG history of violent and genocidal imperial incursions done by Islamic nations into Europe, Africa, and Asia. Let's also ignore how Islamic nations, and their followers in non-Islamic nations, brutally oppress gays, women, and non-Muslims. Let's ignore the fact that the overwhelming majority of terrorist acts done today are perpetuated by Islamists. Nope. Because they are "brown," as far as Chris in Tampa is concerned, they are immune from criticism, or even a response. Or at the very least, everything they do is justified in the name of being anti-Israel and anti-American.

The photo looks 40 years old because of the low light available - that means they have to shoot at a higher ISO to get action shots, which makes it rather grainy.

I recommend following it at http://search.twitter.com/search?q=%23mu… . Up to date, but you have to sort through a fair amount of nonsense as well.

Based on my experience living and traveling abroad the "Muslims" are overwhelmingly nice folks. Just like Americans.

Terrorists, on the other hand, are tragically misguided at best and hateful at worst. Just like Americans.

If you blame all Muslims for the actions of a few whacked terrorists, then you must also blame all Catholics for the actions of Timothy McVeigh.

Some people can be shitty assholes, regardless of their religious upbringing.

there was a similar picture taken and displayed on the npr website, and my first thought was how old it looked. perhaps it was the unintentional grayscale (i know the picture was taken in color, but there are hardly traces of color in the photograph), or the mechanical rigidity of the photograph. we're surrounded by smooth, sleek, modern and this completely juxtaposes my environment.

regardless, it was easy and hard to be grateful this thanksgiving. easy because of the relative safety my environment provides, and hard because of the guilt associated with it.

@14
no one blamed all muslims.

did they?

someone made a factual comment about muslims indicating those shitty muslim asholes who do engage in terrorism should note that eg muslims have lots of nations where they are welcome

to defend against a non attack isn't right on a day when there are people with guns targeting jews and others

the shitty assholes today are those doing the attacking with guns, right?

the victims today are their victims

not the pseudo victims
("all muslims") you are "defending"

I like the phrase "unintentional gray scale" @15 -- that's pretty apt. The major cities in India have a pretty muted color palette -- the buildings, the sky (usually smog- or fog-filled), the ground... everything except the people.

"Sam seems to have been the victim of the hate crime of brown people moving into his neighborhood."

News flash- many Muslims are not "brown" as you not-so eliquently put it. Trying to equate criticism of political Islam with racism is tired.

"If you blame all Muslims for the actions of a few whacked terrorists, then you must also blame all Catholics for the actions of Timothy McVeigh.
Some people can be shitty assholes, regardless of their religious upbringing."

Uh, Islamic terrorists say they are committing their crime on behalf of Islam. I don't remember McVeigh saying he was acting in the name of Christ. If someone committs a crime and says it is their religion that motivates them then of course this is relevent. Furthermore, when white Christians DO commit crimes we are not told we have to symphanize with their plight or be demonized as "racist" and "Christaphobic"

Sorry they couldn't have launched the operation in broad daylight, which would have made for brigther colors in the photo, but most of the assault force would have had their heads shot off if they had. And that cranky old Mi-8 would have been shot down as weel.
