Meanwhile in India

Posted by on Wed, Nov 26, 2008 at 2:06 PM

Coordinated terror attacks struck the heart of Mumbai, India’s commercial capital, Wednesday night, killing dozens in machine-gun and grenade assaults on at least two five-star hotels, the city’s largest commuter train station, a historic movie theater and a hospital. There were unconfirmed reports of hostages having been taken at one of the hotels.

Look at this European Pressphoto Agency image of the scene (Jen, why does this photo make a person think of Goya?):

Why is there nothing there?

To the criminals' credit, it appears they avoided women and children by hitting the men-only section of Mumbai.

the CNN feed at Bulldog News showed some 50s and lesser caliber, so it's not that heavily armed.

And they've taken US and British hostages (once again, Canada escapes!)

A 50 caliber machine gun is a mighty powerful weapon. There are now at least 800 injured. I don't care how well off people are, no one deserves this.

More people die every year in typhoons and hurricanes in just one state in India.

To put it in perspective.

But ... they're poor, instead of rich elite Americans and British busy pumping out the water supply from dry areas of India where more people die due to drought than died in this event.

There - does that give you a better perspective?

And don't get me started on those who die from OUR arms exports to "friendly" nations that shoot their own civilians ...

@5 Yes, but typhoons and hurricanes are things that happen externally. They're natural forces. This is a group of people attacking Mumbai. That's not a natural force, and while the hotels were upscale, the people around there were not. The Taj is a cultural center - there's some excellent info up at NYT as to what the symbolism is of this and how people viewed it. It was a structure created by an Indian businessman to be the best hotel in India because he was told he couldn't stay at the British ones. It's a symbol of independence from Britain.

I'd also like to point out the very high probability that these folks came from Karachi. This pits two nuclear powers against each other yet again - no one ever waves nuclear weaponry at floods or storms. The very nature of this situation makes it more critical for everyone in the world.

As for the arms, it was confirmed that they had ak-47, grenades, and large stashes of RDX. We're not just talking handguns here.

Canadians were reported to be among the hostages or those injured/dead last night, don't know if that's changed this morning.
