War of the Towns

Posted by on Tue, Nov 25, 2008 at 12:51 PM

To be added to an already very long list of reasons why Tacoma hates Seattle:

Shipper moving from Tacoma to Seattle

One of the Port of Tacoma's biggest customers, the Maersk Line, is moving to Seattle.

The change is part of a worldwide vessel-sharing deal between Maersk and the French shipping line CMA. Maersk is the successor to Sea-Land Service that moved from Seattle to Tacoma in 1985.

What, Seattle's a town, not a city, now? Also, why are you trying to stir shit up between Seattle and Tacoma? We've got no beef with Tacoma. It smells bad, but they can't help it.

Greg...you miss the point. It's Tacoma who would have a beef with Seattle in this particular instance. But, (and of course I'm sure I'm speaking for the entire City of Tacoma here...ha!) We'll forgive you if you just cut the crap about the smell.

There should just be one Port Authority for all of Puget Sound. This Tacoma vs Seattle stuff is BS. We should be focusing on Puget Sound vs Long Beach, CA and Vancouver, BC.

They haven't like us since we snubbed their stupid Northern Pacific in favor of the Great Northern.

But in fairness, it should be noted that they tried to kill us with their Northern Pacific.

Shippers have been moving from Seattle to Tacoma for years. This is a welcome move in the other direction. The Port of Tacoma is actually by some measures moving more container traffic than the Port of Seattle.

Tacoma smells pretty good to me-- better than the Portland Cabbage Funk that creeps up when the wind is right.

Maersk moving is interesting-- Seattle has a pretty heavy Asian component to its traffic. Maersk also has several large ships in its fleet that dwarf just about anything we regularly get. They rarely ship stateside, but when the cost to ship gets lower, they rear their heads. Can anyone say container war? Yay.

Wait. Which one is Tacoma again?

Er, rather, they rarely send their largest ships stateside. The Emma Maersk is GIGANTIC. Smaller than the Knock Nevis, but still GIGANTIC.

@3 you beat me to it. We should have one Puget port authority, and we should be actively competing with Vancouver and the CA ports for the title of West Coast biggest port.

@9 - Take a look at annual container traffic stats:

Vancouver - 19 million metric tons
Seattle + Tacoma - 24 million metric tons
Los Angeles + Long Beach - 80 million metric tons
Oakland (SF doesn't do containers) - n/a but probably less than Puget Sound

We have a long way to go to beat Los Angeles-Long Beach as the West Coast's largest port.
