The Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders stands as the definitive text on psychiatric disorders. Most of them are quite unfortunate. Published by the American Psychiatric Association—a seemingly stable gang—the fourth edition classifies and enumerates all of the different disorders currently known to humankind. For example, there's Bipolar I Disorder, Most Recent Episode Manic (#296.40), Schizophrenia, Paranoid Type (#295.30), and Obsessive-Compulsive Personality Disorder (#301.40).
But, according to this encyclopedia of instability, there's also another—far more common—disorder: Cannabis Intoxication (#292.89). Mind you, cannabis dependence and cannabis abuse are separate disorders. Just being high is its own mental disease. And here to discuss that excellent episode you enjoyed last weekend while eating an entire ham is Sandy, who looks sort of stoned and has great legs:

Not to be *too* closely associated with Tom Cruise or Scientology, but there are a few skeletons in the DSM closet. It shouldn't be treated too reverently.

The DSM still lists transgender people as mentally ill. Some symptoms of this mental disorder include little girls pretending to be superheroes and little boys wanting to play house. Fuck the DSM.

Gah! That video is made by a total jerk of a guy on youtube who is completely anti-psychiatry. He used to make videos of himself (over 40, overweight, not the most beautiful guy with an annoying voice) ranting about the evils of psychiatry. Then he figured he could get more viewers by filming "sexy" women talking about psychiatry instead. He is disgusting and his videos suck ass!

Holy fuck this is out of context. This chick is pulling out blabber. I won't defend the DSM, but Ms. Thang is just some lady with a tight shirt and broad glasses trying to get attention and giving grossly inaccurate information. I mean, she thinks those codes are only insurance numbers? Are you serious? Bitch, please.

Among my job duties is the task of entering DSM and ICD-9 codes into the electronic records system the hospital where I work recently adopted. It occurred to me that if a patient is really rude I could put in some of the more creative codes (halitosis, bedwetting, flatulence, for example) and make it look like an innocent typographical error. I would never do that, of course. But I do know how.

First off, the DSM does not contain all the disorders known to humankind, but just the symptom clusters recognized by a committee of Psychiatrists in the west that happens to have developed a monopoly on the idea of a big book of classifications. There are many culturally based disorders (see the last appendix of the DSM4 if I recall) that exist all over the world, e.g., ataques de nervios in the Caribbean and some interesting seminal problems in South Asia. The DSM is utterly culturally and temporally based.
What is more: I am not a big fan of the DSM, but one of the reasons for all the substance-related diagnoses is because of the process differential diagnosis used, whereby various explanations are ruled out until a diagnosis narrowed down. So a mental health worker seeing a new patient might diagnose someone who is high with a more serious disorder unless s/he is aware of the criteria for canabis intoxication (which, you will admit, might seem kind of odd if it presents in an unusual context). The DSM also contains criteria for Caffeine- abuse and dependence!

Ok, folks, but the DSM (which is indeed a suspect document) lists out all kinds of chemical intoxications, not just marijuana, including: caffeine, alcohol, amphetamine, cocaine, hallucinogens, opiates, sedatives, and nicotine. It even separates out "Caffeine Intoxication" (305.90), "Caffeine-Induced Anxiety Disorder" (292.89), "Caffeine-Induced Sleep Disorder" (also 292.89), and the catchall "Caffeine-Related Disorder NOS" (292.9). So this video is really just made for stoners.

I just have to add...I have nothing against "over 40, overweight, not the most beautiful guy with an annoying voice" guys in general...they have their charms...I am just saying that people were not paying attention to this guy's youtube channel until he started to hire young women to talk "sexy" about bogus anti-psychiatry shit.
