Slog Commenter Book Report: Enigma Devours Swallowing Darkness

Posted by Paul Constant on Tue, Nov 25, 2008 at 1:10 PM

I bring a batch of advance reader copies to Slog Happy for everyone to enjoy, with the caveat that the person who reads (or tries to read) the book has to review it for all of us here on Slog.

Today’s reviewer is Enigma. Enigma is reviewing Swallowing Darkness, by Laurell K. Hamilton. Anything you don’t like about this review no doubt is due to the editing process and not at all Enigma’s fault and you should blame the editor. I am the editor.

Hamilton is best known for her Anita Blake: Vampire Hunter Series. This is not one of those books. This is a Meredith Gentry novel, dealing with faeries and goblins, and other fantastical things. And lots of sex. But I can't recommend it to you if you didn't already know that. This is the 7th book in the series and you have to read them all to make any sense of it. So go pick up A Kiss of Shadows, the first in the series. I can recommend that one as good fluff.

See? That's how you write a genre book review: Short and sweet, in and out. Many thanks to Enigma, and to everybody else who's taken a book at Slog Happy: Get on it. E-mail your reports to pconstant@thestranger.com.

Going from the title, I bet Merdith Gantry blows a lot of drow elves in this book.

The first four or five Anita Blake books were great, then LKH started writing erotic fanfic about her own characters. The plots fell apart, the characters became as interesting as your regular porn character. Vampires and werewolves all have huge cocks.

Based on the cover, Catherine Tramell would love it.

@1: Haven't read this one, but I have read the first three, and yeah, that's about the speed of it.

"Oh no! The fate of the faerie world is at stake! Let's stop and have crazy group sex! Oh, I'm so scared, I need some more of the sex." About the only thing that does not happen is someone reaching over and masturbating someone during a running gun battle.

I did say it was fluff. But I've been reading both series since I was in high school so I'm attached to the characters.
Yes, it's become about sex, but who doesn't like some erotic vampire fiction now and then?
And, full disclosure, I don't think you can blame Paul if you don't like this review. He used every one of my 92 words. Short is sweet.

Friends don't let friends read Lauren K. Hamilton.

Good diversion programs include Kim Harrison, Charlaine Harris or Patricia Briggs.

You know, women authors in this genre who can actually write.

Isn't "erotic vampire fiction" a redundant phrase?
