Reading Tonight

There are two readings and an open mic tonight.

Up at Third Place Books, Bert Bender and Tony Angell read from Catching the Ebb, which is an illustrated book about drift fishery. Bender is a professor of literature who also works as a "commercial gill-netter." Tony Angell is the illustrator of, among other things, In the Company of Crows and Ravens.

At Elliott Bay Book Company, Alex Kuo reads from White Jade, which is a collection of short stories and a novella. Kuo teaches literature at WSU. Here is what Sherman Alexie has to say about Alex Kuo and White Jade:

I first fell in love with American literature through the poems and stories of Alex Kuo. This gorgeous and intelligent book confirms that love. I'll be reading Alex until the end of days.

When our current Genius recommends a book like that, it has to be the reading of the day.

The full readings calendar, including the next week or so, is here.

What's with "commercial gill-netter" in bold quotes? It's a job, c'mon - lots of folks who work at schools fish in the summer (ok, they're mostly service types, cafeteria/custodian etc, not profs). I'm a student, I do it. Seriously, "literary critics" these days. Sheesh.
