Tonight at the Triple Door:

GIMME SHELTER: A BENEFIT FOR THE DOWNTOWN EMERGENCY SERVICE CENTER w/ THE DUSTY 45s, TINY VIPERS, and KRISTEN WARD

“When it comes to DESC, I can speak from personal experience about the comfort they provide to families like mine,” says Billy Joe Huels of the Dusty 45s, who will also be releasing their new EP, Fortunate Man, at the event. "DESC provided my mentally ill brother real options when he had none. Matthew lives with schizophrenia and was homeless for 8 years. When he wasn't living on the street, his most common residences were King County Jail and Western State Hospital. He failed again and again in other shelters and housing situations. DESC is the first agency to successfully monitor his medication. He recently marked one year in an apartment of his own, operated by DESC. Through their service, my brother now has a humane and stable existence.

DESC is a hard-working and thoughtful organization. Many of my acquaintances work there is some capacity and they are wonderful, self-less (and fun) people. DESC serves our community well. They deserve the support.

DESC runs their buildings like prisons - so caring and thoughtful - families and loved ones suffer

and they are nests for drug peddlers who don't seem to matter much

826 Seattle is having a fundraiser tonight as well, one that I am a part of: http://826seattle.org/mustacheathon2008 ... It's the Mustache Rock benefit concert, with Say Hi and a bunch of other bands. The money goes to helping me and the other tutors I work with continue to provide free tutoring, mentoring, and writing help for Seattle-area kids. Brendan Kiley did this last year, you may recall.

I am sorry you feel that way, Art.

The program is fine and by no means the perfect answer to these people's problems. Seattle is lucky and better off for having it. I believe it was honored for its achievements not so long ago.

Great lineup!

My guess is Art got asked if he wanted some weed by someone trying to cheer him up so he wouldn't jump off a bridge ...

DESC helps the hardest to serve in our communities. people who have been through things i could never imagine and who have been thrown away by our society. they are a critical organization in Seattle and deserve our support.
