Mike Huckabee on Gay Rights

Posted by on Wed, Nov 19, 2008 at 10:43 AM

Mike Huckabee is deeply proud of our country for looking past race in electing Barack Obama—which we did despite the GOP's efforts to keep us focused on race. ("Uppity" anyone?) And Mike remembers the separate water fountains of segregation, blah blah blah, and what an evil time that was. But gay rights? Eh, well... um... gay rights are totally different. Because Mike says so. The proof? We're not getting our "skulls cracked open" at a rate that would justify granting us our full civil rights—oh, and some gays are rude.

Says Queerty...

Last week in Memphis, Duanna Johnson, a transexual was murdered execution-style. 15 year-old Lawrence King was murdered earlier this year for being gay. 16.6% of all hate crimes are directed at LGBT Americans. 4 out of 10 gay men are the victims of homophobia-related violence, as is 1 in 8 lesbians and bisexuals.

If Huckabee thinks it's not a civil rights movement until somebody's "skull's cracked", if violence directed on a people is the most important metric to him, then he owed the gay community an immediate apology– not just for being willfully ignorant of the ongoing violence against LGBT Americans, but inviting further violence by recklessly implying that it's only when people get physically attacked that their views should be taken seriously.

Perhaps marriage would be better off if it was stricken ENTIRELY from anything government related. In order for ANYONE to get hospital visiting and joint tax filing and what have you, they would have to have a civil union... available to all. That way, churches could still be bigots about marriage but at least marriages wouldn't mean anything legally.

Meh... never gonna happen.

@2, the last I checked the donations were more than $5,000, well over the $1,200 needed for the funeral. The rest goes to her family. I dunno how much of that came from Sloggers; I imagine a sizable chunk.

I'm so tired of the whole 'lets pat ourselves on the back for electing a black guy' from white Republicans. No offense to Barack, but he was simply better than the pile of crap Huckabee's party proposed.

And the violence against christians claim is total bullshit. Someone had a cross knocked out of her hand and now they want to turn her into the next Josephine the Plumber.

Another silver tongued southerner gets it completely wrong and remains stuck in the 1950's. Idiot.

Why is anyone - Dan, sloggers, ANYONE - paying any attention to what Mike Huckabee says?

Moses "Teish" Cannon
Tony Randolph Hunter
Steven Parrish
Lawrence "Larry" King
Duanna Johnson
Osvan Inacio dos Santos
Sean William Kennedy
Roberto Duncanson

The above are eight homosexuals whose killings made national headlines, in just the past two years.
How many persons are being beaten and killed in attacks that don't make the news?
Someone tell Mr. Huckabee that enough skulls have already been cracked.

Take Huckabee down, bitches! I am so happy that the gay marriage debate has been re-framed within the mainstream media as a civil rights struggle. Now every time some Republican douche tries to praise Obama's victory as a victory for civil rights, we can counter by bringing up gay civil rights! Way to go, View! Right on target!

"Segregation was an institution too,
you know it was right there on the books"

Joyce said to counter Huckabee's double talk and hypocrisy when it comes to gay rights.

Sherri Shepherd's response to Behar was: to side with Huckabee and tell Joyce to not equate the two. "I don't agree". Still some people refuse to see why prop 8 got so much support from certain sectors of our population with that type of mentality so prevalent amongst them.

I was with you until you said "inviting further violence by recklessly implying that it's only when people get physically attacked that their views should be taken seriously". How exactly does that invite further violence? Do you think there are bigots out there now thinking, "I better go crack some skulls so the gays can get their rights"? Uhm no.

#14 - And when was the last time you heard Sherri Shepherd say anything even remotely intelligent?

Like most christianists, Huckabee gets away with deliberately inflating anti-bigot "violence" and devaluing anti-gay violence. He should try walking in a pair of gay shoes for a couple of months and see what it's really like before he opens his stupidity slot and lets more dumb fall out of it.

the view is exactly where huckabee belongs. that makes for a whole table of "easy to ignore." i fail to see a problem here.

Man these tired, up-tight, ancient righty bastards are really starting to get old. Civil rights have to be earned by being beaten and abused? Riiight. Even if that were true though, gays have definitely taken their share. Thank god for Stonewall.

Apparently Mr. Huckabee is unaware of the TWENTY-EIGHT (that we know of) TRANS-PEOPLE who were victims of unprovoked FATAL violence this year. They were killed simply for the offense of presenting themselves in public as they really are inside.

The Transgender Day of Remembrance honors them and it is TODAY, Nov. 20. Find a commemorative event in your area and attend it.
