Youth Pastor Watch

Posted by Dan Savage on Tue, Nov 18, 2008 at 10:00 AM

Alabama:

Increases in teenage pregnancies have Alabama officials worried and wondering what's gone wrong....

Some blame TV... Randy Breedlove, youth minister at Morningview Baptist Church, said it's not just the adult-themed shows that have more sexual content.

"Ten years ago we didn't have Viagra commercials or condom commercials," said Breedlove, who is trained through Sav-a-Life Montgomery Inc. to educate teenagers about abstinence. "But now, they are just like Uncle Ben's commercial."

And some blame youth pastors...

Ohio:

small_Workman.jpgJeremy Workman, 33, of Olmsted Falls was sentenced to four years in prison for having sex with a minor four years ago when he was head of the youth ministry at Berea Baptist Church. Workman was 29 at the time and the girl was 15, said Ryan Miday, a spokesman for the Cuyahoga County prosecutor's office.

In September, Workman pleaded guilty to one count of unlawful sexual conduct with a minor, a third-degree felony. Workman was indicted in April after it became apparent he had sex with the woman when she was a minor.

The woman recently gave birth and Workman is the child's father, said Miday.

So in the Ohio story, are they a couple? If so, that's great timing by the state to toss him in jail just when his kid is born. Useless, reactive punishment at its finest.

Right, because knowing about something makes you automatically HAVE TO DO IT. BTW, condoms help prevent pregnancy you asshat.

I blame teen pregnancy on the existence of sex. As long as sex exists and there's nothing we can do about that, the next best thing would be if the media would cooperate with the Baptist church in keeping quiet about the existence of sex. These condom ads and Viagra ads aren't helping.

The strategy of Complete Denial only works if everybody everywhere agrees to keep silent about the existence of sex at all times, and some of you aren't doing your part! Remember, it takes a village to misinform a child.

Randy Breedlove...that has to be a fake name. Like witness protection or maybe part of some sort of undercover police sting.

"...sentenced to four years in prison for having sex with a minor four years ago"

and

"The woman recently gave birth and Workman is the child's father, said Miday."

A gestation period of four years? I guess Youth Pastor sperm has holy, magical qualities.

sleestak, how does "being a couple" legitimize criminal behavior? BTW, this guy is married with a two year old son (in addition to the baby with the teenager). Look him up on myspace, he has a public picture of himself with his little boy. He goes by "Jay" but you can find him under his real name.

@10, I'm not legitimizing it, but he and the girl are obviously still having sex, and since she's 19, it's no longer statuatory rape... and she's obviously consenting to having sex with him presently... is tossing him in jail going to make things better or worse? Yeah, he's a creep but does the state really need to tiredly mete out his justice?

#11, maybe he'll find God in prison and clean up his act so he won't prey on other children. I say it's worth a shot :)
