Ted Stevens Defeated

Posted by Eli Sanders on Tue, Nov 18, 2008 at 6:07 PM

The AP calls the Alaska Senate race for Democrat Mark Begich:

ANCHORAGE, Alaska — Alaska Sen. Ted Stevens has lost his bid for a seventh term. The longest-serving Republican in the history of the Senate trailed Anchorage Mayor Mark Begich by 3,724 votes after Tuesday's count. That's an insurmountable lead with only about 2,500 overseas ballots left to be counted.

Stevens, who turned 85 Tuesday, also revealed that he will not ask President George W. Bush to give him a pardon for his seven felony convictions.

That gives the Democrats 58 seats in the Senate, just two votes shy of a filibuster-proof majority. (With two Senate races, in Minnesota and Georgia, still undecided.)

You included Joe Lieberman. He's a Republican.

Disintegrator: He's a Republican who votes with the Democrats. Which is precisely why the Democratic party leadership is more interesed in what he wants than in what the netroots want.

And that margin is big enough to prevent a recount! Hurrah!

Next question: will they send 800-year-old Ted Stevens to prison?

Thank buddha we won't have to see Palin in the senate (at least for the next two years)...

RE: Pardons

SLOG!, tell us, we unwashed masses, where be the scholarly speculation amongst great media sources of whom Dear Leader might deign to pardon in his Last Days?

Lieberman pardoned, Cheney condemned, Stevens cast out, no free Senate seat for Palin. Kind of a big day.

He'll probably be pardoned, but being convicted and losing the longest-held Republican Senate seat in disgrace will still suffice for me.

I'm SO relieved. I'm thankful that we (I'm an Alaskan) have redeemed ourselves just a little bit. I emphasize "a little."

I told my 93 year old formerly of Alaska grandmother this and her response, and I quote, was "Good. Couldn't happen to a nicer sonofabitch. I hope they throw his ass in jail until he dies."

I have a kick ass grandmother.

He won't see jail time, they figger. Too old for it to be worth it, prolly fine the sh-t out of him and call it good. I think at that age, its more about making a point that having him repay a debt to society.

@3: I think it's a bit more like gravity. Sure, Joe Lieberman votes with the Democrats. But the Democrats vote a little bit to the right with Joe Lieberman, too--it's just harder to see because his effect is spread over many.

Don't look for The Ted Stevens Anchorage International Airport to be renamed any time soon, remember this is Alaska we are talking about.

Bush will pardon him none the less, he won't have to ask for it, it will happen.

It appears that a pardon can be rejected, and must be affirmatively accepted to be officially recognized by the courts. Acceptance also carries with it an admission of guilt. - wikipedia

He won't do that. But the appeal process could last years and a settlement deal is always an option.

I would imagine that Obama's Justice would be good with that.

My wife is Alaskan and her response today was "Yay!" I'm sad to report, however, that her mother voted for Stevens with the thought process that he'd be booted by the Senate and they'd get a special election, thus, she said, "more choices." Meaning Begich wasn't her pick.So she still voted for a felon. I don't have much hope for Alaska. I still say we Escape from L.A. that shit and laser Alaska off of the U.S., turn it into a federal prison. My grandpa was born there during their gold rush. I think it's fitting. Bunch of crazies up there.

Blue Dog Democrates. You people need to learn what that means. A good gage of how many are in the senate would be the number that voted not to shit can lieberman. 60 shittards with a D in front of their name does not mean a progessive agenda is going to move forward.

What I think is interesting is that some many people voted FOR this corrupt felon. Apparently large number of the electorate's morality will allow them to vote for a corrupt felon if it means money in their pockets.

this is excellent. one more slap in the face to alaska. i'd like to see alaska secede (how is that spelled?) and then sarah palin can rule as their stupid queen and we'd never have to deal with them again!!!

I really don't understand all this hoopla over getting 60 votes in the Senate. It's as if people think that all the conservative Democrat senators are suddenly going to start voting along party lines. There's too many, uh, mavericks in the Senate to care about this count as being anything other than symbolic.

He's against a constitutional amendment to define marriage, but is against gay marriage. He is aagainst affirmative action. Except for being pro choice, pro gun control & pro environment, Leiberman is a big C conservative.

I think @2 and 24 are right. We need to be careful about assuming what having 58 Democrats plus two Independents (Lieberman and Sanders) who caucus with the Democrats really means. If you're thinking it's a slam dunk for everything Obama wants to pass, that's likely not true, since Lieberman, and some of the other more centrist or even conservative Dems will likely end up not supporting filibusters on every single thing. Obama knows this, which is why he is making nice with some Republicans. Also, doing things solely along party lines is dangerous, in that if shit goes wrong, the Dems will get blamed and have no cover at all. If there is at least some bipartisanship (a few Republicans on this or that legislation), it will be much harder for Republicans to continue this "one-party dominance is bad for America" narrative.

All that said (in #28), seeing Stevens go down makes we want to seriously cry tears of joy. If it hadn't been for friggin' Prop 8, the other anti-gay legislation that passed on Election Day, and Senator Mitch Mcconnell and Congressman Don Young getting re-elected, I'd be losing my fucking mind with celebration.

The longest-serving Republican in Senate history narrowly lost his re-election bid Tuesday. Anchorage Mayor Mark Begich's victory moves Senate democrats within two seats of a filibuster-proof 60-vote majority.A recount is possible. If the vote differential between the two candidates is more than 0.5 percent, either side can seek a recount if it posts a bond of about 15,000 to pay for a new tally.
