My President Wants to Fight Global Warming

Posted by Paul Constant on Tue, Nov 18, 2008 at 10:29 AM

Barack Obama delivered a message to the Bi-partisan Governor's Global Climate Summit today.

If you don't have video at your work computer, here is the swoony part:

And once I take office, you can be sure that the United States will once again engage vigorously in these negotiations, and help lead the world toward a new era of global cooperation on climate change.

Now is the time to confront this challenge once and for all. Delay is no longer an option. Denial is no longer an acceptable response. The stakes are too high. The consequences, too serious.

Sigh. He's so dreamy.

It's going to be so awesome to have a president who won't "just do", but one that you, ya know, root for. One who you like. One you'd love to have a beer with while watching the poor, poor Seahawks get clobbered.

People are still running with this? How many warming summits held with feet of snow outside are needed before we admit climate is minimally influenced by man?

@3 Actually, I'm surprised that people are still running with the "OMG there's still snow in the world and we don't all have skin cancer so there's no such thing as climate change" rhetoric.

Wow. Leadership instead of reaction and avoidance. Hard to believe.

@3 feet of snow is weather, not climate.

I'm rather pessimistic about the prospect for global cooperation on anything. We haven't been able to prevent the collapse of major fisheries, and the economic consequences of over-fishing were a lot more obvious than the consequences of greenhouse gas emissions.

It's OK to admit you've all been duped.

Yeah whatever, the stakes are distant, the prices are now. Obama can talk, Gore can talk, if they can come up with completely pain-free plan then good for them. If they ask people to sacrifice for some islanders somewhere or so that we might have 7 hurricanes one year instead 8 or maybe sacrifice and find out it was for naught it ain't gonna happen.

He's really selling American green technology folks. That's great! Join the world in fighting global warming and at the same time sell our energy alternative technology. Jobs, jobs, and more jobs! He's smart.

The first thing I thought of when I read this was the Kyoto Protocols. Now, I'm a pretty-darned-blue Obama voter who's intensely relieved that a Democrat is moving into the White House, but I have to confess that I think the Bush administration has a point in not signing Kyoto because of China & India getting off the hook here. I would hope some sort of compromise can be reached here.

Remember when we said this about 520 and ST - and you laughed?

Yeah, we were serious then.

And doubly so now.

And Bush is a douche re Kyoto, Chris. No matter how you slice it. He just wanted cover to do nothing - which is what he did, dooming our auto industry in the process.

@Bryan - as in all matters political, follow the money. Yes, Gore has made cash promoting his movie and so on, but that's chickenscratch compared to the total economic cost of switching off fossil fuels - a cost borne mostly by the oil companies and established fuel, shipping, and transportation industries. Nobody stands to gain as much money - at least, no currently powerful industry, with billions to finance - by promoting global warming as much as these guys stand to lose. Follow the money. And pay attention to scientific consensus. Yes, the odd researcher can be bought off to deny it, but the consensus is pretty overwhelming.

denial is no longer an acceptable response, but let's give detroit 30 billion dollars to keep making fossil fuel burning private transportation that requires a massive government subsidised infrastructure of concrete & asphalt & steel.
