Teapot Dome all over again.

Will anyone be surprised if Cheney suddenly becomes too ill to testify if and when he's finally called before a senate subcommittee?

And on this day, the people of Hell felt a little nip in the air. Looks like a low-pressure system may be approaching. Looks like freezing temperatures and maybe a some frost for our southern most city.

"The indictment criticizes Cheney's investment in the Vanguard Group, which holds interests in the private prison companies running the federal detention centers."

I'm assuming they're referring to the Vanguard Group that's one of the biggest mutual fund companies on Earth. If I hold a vanguard fund in my 401k does that mean I'm also guilty? This is a publicity stunt.

Cheney is crazy and I wouldn't be surprised if he's broken hundreds of laws while being VP but indicting him for this is pretty dumb and it's not going to be good when/if people pursue him for actual crimes he may have committed.

But what does this ultimately mean for the 3 of them? I understand the symbolism, but what now? Oh, nothing? Bummer.

Yeah, in 2006 a jury in that same county awarded the largest damages claim ever against that private prison owner, the Geo Group, for liability in a prisoner murder. The verdict was almost $50 million.

Under the direction of Juan Guerra, possibly the most eccentric district attorney I've ever heard of, the county grand jury just last month indicted the company on criminal murder charges related to the same death. The Geo Group is the largest of the privatized-prison operators, and it's mostly owned by institutional investors, i.e., 401(k) type funds. Largest institutional investors include Wells Fargo, Fidelity and Barclays.

They run around 50 prisons in the U.S., one in South Africa, some in Australia, and one in the U.K. In Washington state, Geo runs the delightful Tacoma Immigration lockup. At Guantanamo Bay, they're in charge of the Migrant Operations Center.

remember, in Texas proof of actual innocence isn't enough to get you off death row, and having your lawyer sleep through your trial isn't evidence of poor representation. I'm glad someone had the balls to file an indictment.

@6 --

That's exactly what the Democrats said about Albert Fall (the original Fall Guy) in regards to Teapot Dome.

@11 for the really really true and not often recognized win.

Seriously, there's a reason why Thelma and Louise avoided Texas - you don't want to be caught or returned there - they execute people for NOTHING there.

Consistently.

Over and over and over.

Why does the fact that Cheney's investment portfolio contains lots of stock in privatized prisons not surprise me even a little?

First Obama elected...

then Snoop goes on Martha...

Now this? Seriously? This month is too awesome.

If only we could keep Gitmo open just long enough to send through a couple more extra special VIP prisoners.

And most importantly, there have been more sunny days in Seattle this November than most can remember.

Now Dan can be happy. (heh heh)
