The Mayoral Race: It's On

Posted by Erica C. Barnett on Mon, Nov 17, 2008 at 4:40 PM

In what may be the earliest mayoral reelection launch ever, business-industry supporters of Mayor Greg Nickels (up for reelection in 2009) are holding a fundraiser right after Thanksgiving, on Wednesday, December 3 at the downtown law offices of Foster Pepper PLLC. The invitation, signed by representatives of Vulcan, Eli Lilly, Wright Runstad, Wells Fargo, and Lease Crutcher Lewis, among others, warns Nickels supporters to "be mindful of the tax burden placed on the business community," and notes that Nickels's "bold and steady leadership in encouraging the transformation of South Lake Union in a few short years into a thriving biotech, commercial and residential center ... has been remarkable."

The suggested donation? Between $250 and $700 (the legal limit). So far, Nickels has collected $241,718.52, and has $174,864.78 in the bank.

Tax Burden? SLU?

Wow. He's going to lose big time if those are his strengths - the reality is most voters are on the other side of the equation and we live in the age of YouTube when viral vids rule.

Hey, this guy Nickles seems so easily defeatable....I mean, all we Republicans have to do is run a middle-of-the-road guy with little political experience and lots of big business connections...he'll be a shoo in to win....er....right?

Who is the other guy?

I'm looking for a hard-line fiscal conservative. He can mouth platitudes about social services and the environment, as long as he doesn't spend any money on them. Someone like Bloomberg has been for New York.

If the other guy is just some ueber-lefty city council type, I'll take the guy in bed with the developers.

And can we please get some decent candidates for Council! So far, those who have filed, and those rumored to file, are so lackluster.

WTF David Wright? I do not understand why people live in this expensive city when they want homeless people sleeping in the rain and abused wives to remain dependent upon their abusers and the natural environment gutted.

Can't you live in, uh, pretty much any other American city? I recommend Provo, Utah. $150k houses.

Nickels is ready. He has been to the tanning salon. He has the money. And he has been down to Seattle Tent and Awning to be fitted for a couple of new suits.

Idea: re-elect him but then convince him that XYZ meaningless state office is totally his bag and is ___ steps away from the governor's seat!

Can we get a district-based city council, so that we don't have a council full of toadies for Mayor McCheese?

I don't care who the other guy is. I'm voting for her.

All Nickels has accomplished has been to make Northgate bigger.

I don't 100 percent understand why we want the other candidate, but I think we're right.

Yes! The other candidate. Yes, Seattle is AWFUL. I hate it here. It is the worst city. I would be much happier in Tacoma, or LA, or Detroit. We are unsafe, there are no jobs, and..well, it must be bad because I am incapable of ever supporting anything positive, or that has actually done something.

Let me guess. Nickels going to say that as an aspiring third term incumbent, who has spent more money than any mayor in Seattle history on his campaigns, and who has always been in the pocket of the real estate arm of one of the wealthiest men on the planet, that he's all about CHANGE.

Coming out of the First big change budget, the Mayor and council are looking good. King County is at the very fiscal edge, not Seattle.

Trash about all you want, the next election will be about the local economy - and thus far some cuts, more money for food - and 30 mill still stashed in the bank, Seattle is still standing.

Keep on trashing, cause there was a giant boom for ten years. Oh, it was so horrible to have so many people with so much money flowing all directions.

Hungry children will haunt America. The horrid Mayor and horrid Council just pumped millions more into food bank support.

Oh well, I want to talk about the style of new houses not being built any more. Lala land does not elect anyone.

If Vulcan keeps building during the depression, good old Paul will be on the cover of Time.

And Nickels makes more green sense than the rest put together, composting alone will not save he planet. Don't tell Conlin. Conlin will run against Nickels. He is lusting.... in his own way.
