Nice work, Obama. Godspeed, tobacco addicts.

In other tobacco news, there's a new way to get your fix without lighting up. Reynolds American, makers of Camels, is announcing today "dissolvable strips, orbs and sticks made from finely milled tobacco." The benefit, they say, is that there is no spitting and nothing to throw away. You're basically just eating tobacco.

Excuse me, but has this passed FDA review?

And if so, why is a highly-addictive drug like this, easily consumed by children in class (the target audience for tobacco is 10-12 yo kids) passing said review?

No sane doctor would approve it.

Did he quit? I thought he was smoking through the campaign.

I have to admit, that is a very insidious product line. That said, I imagine it could become extremely popular. The idea of a toothpick-sized smokeless nicotine delivery system will probably do very well in markets where public smoking is heavily restricted.

If anything goes towards reducing the amount of cigarette butts carelessly thrown everywhere, it can't be half bad, but considering that a well-developed cigarette addiction goes far beyond just a nicotine fix (hand-to-mouth behavior, oral fixation, manipulation of the actual smoke) I don't really see this catching on. #1 has a point, too.

I don't think he was smoking during the campaign, but engaging in the quitter's one-two punch of daily gym first thing in the morning, plus (according to NYT) his body man Reggie Love following him around with "emergency" Nicorette in case the President-elect's own suit pockets run empty.

@5 It's my impression, based on the description in the article, that the dissolvable "sticks" would to some extent replicate the hand-to-mouth, oral fixation aspect of traditional cigarettes. You ever tried stick an entire toothpick inside your mouth? Doesn't really work.

There is a simple way to make all American's quit smoking.

Force tobacco companies to put emetics in all cigarette.

You smoke. You vomit.

You smoke. You vomit.

Eventually you die from vomiting or quit smoking.

Dissolvable tobacco ("hard snuff") isn't new -- it's been available at least since 2001 in the U.S. (one brand is Ariva, if you're looking).

@5, just wanted to let you know that I'm an unrepentant smoker who NEVER throws cigarette butts on the ground. There are some of us out there.

@7: Speak for yourself. I can easily get an entire box of toothpicks in my mouth. Though just the single one, poking my cheeks out into little tents, is usually enough to turn the average observer's stomach.

They should have put a period or some other unit of punctuation after "quit," or made "obama quit" regular type instead of bold, or something to make this read as two statements.
