Meh

Posted by Paul Constant on Mon, Nov 17, 2008 at 1:54 PM

meh_cat.jpgVia Maud, there's news that the Collins dictionary has included the word "meh" as the newest word in the English language

I'm not really crazy about the word "meh"—I guess you could say I'm meh about it—because it's the vocal equivalent of a disaffected shrug. I was having a very long e-mail argument once with some douchebag about his use of the word "cunt," (I really hate using the word "cunt," when used as a description of a woman, especially when it's a douchebag guy using the word) and he finally just ended the fight by saying "Meh. I'm not into political correctness." If he had said "Meh" to me in person, I would've fucking driven his head through a wall.

But in any case, I'm completely in favor of "meh" going into the dictionary because it was competing against the words "jargonaut," "frenemy," and "huggles." Those are all much worse words than "meh."

Didn't "meh" come from The Simpsons?

Paul, in my experience, when someone makes a statement to the effect of "I am not into political correctness" he is really saying "Warning: I am about to make a racist/misogynist/homophobic statement."

Whats up, hostile. Driving heads through walls?
Doubt it.

To contribute some actual content, would this be the first time a Simpsons-spawned word was added to the dictionary?

If there were ever a word I didn't need defined, it's "meh." It's pretty self-explanatory.

@6 - I believe "d'oh" made it in first.

Frenemy is a great word! And been around a while (at least 30 years). I'm surprised it isn't in the dictionary already.

I find it amusing that they are including a word born on the very medium that is rendering their product obsolete.

Really, who give two fucks about dictionaries or what words they choose to include.

@8 : D'oh! Of course...

And just what the fuck is wrong with 'cunt' when used against a woman, eh? If you're calling sexism then why isn't it just as offensive when used against a man?

"Meh" was used in the Simpson's episode where the family goes to "Block-o Land" (stand-in for LegoLand,)

"Meh" is Bart and Lisa reaction when Homer announces that he's taking the family to "Block-o Land."

If he didn't use the word "cunt," would he still be a douchebag? In other words, were there other factors relating to his douchebagginess beyond his misogynist speech? We need a Steve Irwin-sort of person to hunt down, examine, and rectally violate douchebags to answer these questions once and for all.

@8 you sir are offensive, much worse than cunt weilding douche-bags, i will not allow the miley cyrus vocabulary to take over the lexicon.

Yes to "frenemies" but no to "enemends" or "fraters"? Tina Fey says "blergh."

I am not talking about who says the fucking word. I am talking about who the word is directed to, and it is just as offensive to women no matter who it is directed at.

@17: He was already a douchebag I was fighting with over a story I wrote. That side argument about "cunt" was just the, um, icing on the douchebag, er, cake.

I think there is some confusion here between a style or etiquette guide and a dictionary.

I hate the word, meh. Hate it. Along with "heh."

Like WTF people, are you too ironically detached that you can't express boredom without disinterest?

I'm not down with the resurgence of "cunt," but I'm not happy with the return of "douchebag," either. "Motherfucking titty-sucking two-ball bitch" is preferable to both. When are people going to start using it in their e-mail arguments??

I quite like 'meh'. It's really useful when someone asks how your day is going. My days frequently are rather meh.

On the other hand, I'm finding myself internally using the word 'cunt' a lot more frequently these days and I have no idea why.

@32,

Yes, as do the Aussies.

ie, "How's youz cunts goin'?".

It's a word you say to your mates.

This habit of adding words every year is getting so stupid. If they're adding "meh," why not "hmm" and "uh"?
