Trans Woman Murdered

Posted by Dan Savage on Fri, Nov 14, 2008 at 10:56 AM

This news is heartbreaking:

duanna_johnson.jpgOn February 12, 2008, Duanna Johnson was brutally beaten by a Memphis police officer after she refused to respond when the officer called her “he-she” and “faggot.” That night, Johnson became yet another of the countless trans women of color to be targeted and brutalized by police in this country. Two officers were fired after the attack; neither was prosecuted.

Just to be trans, just to be a woman, just to be a person of color in this country is enough to drastically increase one’s exposure to hatred and violence; when oppressions overlap, violence tends to multiply.

This past Sunday, Duanna Johnson was found murdered on the streets of Memphis. I didn’t hear about this until today, when I read a post on my friend Dean’s blog. When I read the awful news, I felt heartsick in a way that has become all too familiar and all too frequent.

The Tennessee Transgender Political Coalition is raising money to pay for Johnson's funeral expenses. Says Angry Brown Butch:

A Google BlogSearch for Duanna Johnson: 2,300 results. For Prop 8? 240,839, or 100 times more.

Don’t think I’m being deliberately unrealistic or dismissive here. I don’t deny that the passage of Proposition 8 is harmful to the LGBT community and bears much anger, attention, and agitation. I understand the difference in magnitude of the number lives directly affected by the passage of Proposition 8 versus the number of lives directly affected by Duanna Johnson’s murder. I get that.

Yet still, the disparity in attention is damn stark.... I hope that many people donate whatever they can. $1195 is a relatively small amount to raise. Given that the No On Prop 8 campaign was able to raise $37.6 million - or 31,464 times the cost of Duanna Johnson’s funeral - raising this far smaller amount should be no problem for our community. Right

Sloggers all by ourselves ought to be able to cover the $1195. Donate now. (Currently the site shows $0 raised. I just tried to make a donation and failed—I'm an idiot, and can't make PayPal work. So I've asked the boyfriend to go make a donation for us.)

Followed the link and successfully completed a donation.  The TTPC page still shows "Collected: $0.00."  It seems to be just blog entry text, not a live tally.

Yes, I just donated $25, and it still says "$0 collected." I got a reciept from PayPal, so it went through, but I'm not sure how often it gets updated. Thanks for posting.

The blog post requesting donations is dated yesterday, and it's the newest thing on the site.

I donated too. God Bless Duanna, and all people who are victimized for who they are. I hope her family is heartened by the generosity of strangers, and know they are not alone.
I am so happy with the USA's reaction to Prop 8 (and 2, and the others. . .) Four and eight years ago, when many DOMA laws were created, there was little national outcry. We were not surprised they passed. Now, it is one of the dominating news stories, and people have and will be protesting across the country. Change is coming, and quickly!

Keep em going - TTPC says the funeral home wants its money TODAY and I bet they're too busy right now to update their donation count.

I'm genderqueer and from the South. This could have been me, had I not had the fortune to be able to use university as a way to escape to the Northwest.

Jesus, this is heartbreaking.

We're poor too, but I just kicked in $15. I hope enough people come together to at least get her buried with dignity.

@15, it doesn't automatically update. Whoever runs the donation account is probably frantically adding up the numbers due to the flurry of donations from around the country.

Damn, that poor girl. I remember first reading about her on Slog, and expecting it to become widespread news like the Rodney King video, but it never did.

I'm a Canadian folk songwriter, and I wrote a song about Duanna a few months ago, because I was inspired by her courage in standing up for her dignity. For anyone interested, you can see lyrics and hear a very no-frills recording here:

Also, if anybody has any suggestions as to how I might donate the use of the song, please feel free to email me (see the contact page on my website).

Thank you for reposting this, Dan, and thank you to everyone for their donations and generosity. No amount of money can make up for the horrible loss that Duanna Johnson's family and friends are dealing with right now, but at least we can ease their financial burden and give them one less thing to worry about while they grieve.

Wrote about this the other day, didn't know about the fundraiser... can't afford to donate but I'll post an update about the fundraiser.

Sad story, but the lawsuit is supposedly going forward against the police so hopefully that will prompt some needed change there.

I hate that these two aren't rotting in prison somewhere.

I say the Matthew Shepard Act should be the Shepard-Johnson Act. Is there no clearer example of a need for a federal hate crimes law?
