Sound Transit Gets Big Federal Grant

Posted by on Fri, Nov 14, 2008 at 3:30 PM

Right on the heels of November 4's huge mass transit win, Sound Transit just got another piece of good news: The Federal Transit Administration has awarded the agency an $813 million grant, pending a 60-day period of congressional review. The grant will fully fund the extension of light rail from downtown through Capitol Hill and to the University of Washington.

This is seriously good, since now we can take crystals for x-ray diffraction in SF staight from the UWMC! Saving tons of time.

What? No one has come in yet with the dreary years-late-and-billions-overbudget line?

What makes me laugh about that is the implied idea that if we just WAIT, or have another agency handle it, everything will magically get less expensive, and be done much quicker.

At least with them going mostly underground on this phase, we stand the chance of not being delayed by some simple-minded movement like "Save Our Valley".

This is awesome. What a great month for Mass Transit. Makes me wish I wasn't moving out East... almost.

I want to see the Discovery Institute make the case for Governance Reform now. Let's privatize transit and turn it over to these well run companies like GM (not) ... or Washington Mutual (not)... or Chrysler (not).....

I knew we'd find a poor soul to come in and tow the party line!

Max, here's the deal: YOU try building a transit system that should have been built fifty years ago through some of the most expensive real estate on the planet. If you can do it "on time and on budget" I'll be impressed.

Until then, you're just another crank looking for something to complain about.

Ahahaha, I love the McDermott love.

@11: Click the link, he's talking about the Runway.

Anyway, let's celebrate that in 2016, the travel time from UW to Cap Hill will go from 22 minutes to 3. NINETEEN-FUCKING-MINUTES.

Awesome. Cause there isn't enough public transit connecting the U District to EVERYWHERE. Maybe we could get some light rail in some other part of the city. Just for kicks.
