Sloganeering

In advance of tomorrow's National Day of Protest Against Prop 8 (here's full info on the Seattle march and rally), you're probably racking your brains for sassy-yet-effective slogans for your protest signs and posters.

Well, many other people have already racked their brains in this regard, and you should feel free to steal liberally from the store of existing wisdom. Here are some good standard options, many culled from this Slog call for slogans last week.

Prop 8: $25 Million Wasted on Hate

Legislating
Discrimination
Stinks

Down with Religious Fascism

Real Family Values Value All Families

And of course the perennials:

Against gay marriage? Don't have one.

Equal Rights are Not Special Rights

We Shall Overcome

Again, here's full info on the National Day of Protest, and on the Seattle-specific protest.

P.S. Remember how the Mormons raised $25 million to pass Prop 8? Well, the National Day of Protest asks you to pony up no money beyond protest-related arts-n-crafts supplies. So please consider donating to Duanna Johnson Fund.

Won't they have to clear road in the lower part of Volunteer Park of all those guys waiting in cars for "dates" before the parade can start?

Slogans have incredible value. And these are scatterbrained. I urge everyone to consider the political FRAME that the gay-rights movement desperately needs, and for everyone to stay on message to that. (Yup, just like the good ol' Team Obama taught us....)
The winning frame: Constitutional Liberty.
Focus on the success in history of women's rights, black's rights, etc. Talk about how all people are equal in America, and denying gays equal rights is Un-American! Use humor and cleverness as spice, but stay focused on the frame.
I mean, if we can't unite on a message, how are we gonna unite the country behind our movement?

I'm leaning towards a slogan based on Paula Poundstone's quip about Prop 8 in her PI interview today: "Anyone who wants to ruin their lives with marriage should have this opportunity."

4: "Uniting on a message" does not mean speaking in verbatim unison. The message of the Obama campaign was "Vote for Obama, for he is the better candidate," and people voted to support that message for 1,001 personal reasons. The message of tomorrow's protest is that marriage discrimination is unfair and un-American, and again, people have 1,001 ways of expressing this, while staying on message.

The main message of tomorrow's rally/march: a ton of people care about this. So showing up, en masse. is a citizen's main duty. Carry on.

@2... gay stereotypes seem counter-productive in the context of these protests.

@4... exactly! Historical context. Paint them as the doomed to history assholes that they are. I think the interracial marriage comparison is good.

I'm going to be really tickled if I see people with that Legislating Discrimination Stinks (or Sucks) sign. That one was mine, and jeebus, was it ever hard to come up with something that had the initials LDS and still made some kind of logical sense...

#9- Having people march is obviously valuable. But I doubt that it will do much to change bigoted minds. And that is our purpose, no? (This march, after all, is about the uniting of our movement.... What better time than this to discuss our next steps?)
Again: In whole, the gay-rights movement needs to be framed in a simple digestive idea: Liberty for all. The American ideal.
We can and should continue to address the cultural acceptance of queers, but political acceptance is different. (And we're doing a lousy job at playing politics....)
Please, don't underestimate the power of framing and uniting behind a core message. In the political realm, it is everything.
Focus focus focus-- Constitutional Liberty!
