Protest Letter from New York

Posted by Eli Sanders on Fri, Nov 14, 2008 at 2:57 PM

Hi Eli,

I have a boyfriend/partner of 10 years. We made jokes about Gay people that go to Pride, or stereotypical Gay people (which, I should point out, is more than ironic). For some reason we never saw ourselves as a part of something larger. We were Gay, but it wasn't who we where. It was just a small part, and honestly, we kind of shied away from anything that linked us too much with the gay community. We liked to be people first, and anything else second.

Two things have changed that for us: The first was Prop. 8... The second is that after two and a half years of trying to have a baby, we are 12 weeks pregnant. I want our child, and hopefully our children, to live in a world that values their family, and all families.

We felt like equality was just a matter of time. We felt like we just had to weather the storm. We are tired of weathering, and we are tired of waiting. We will stand on the steps of City Hall in New York at 1:30 tomorrow with the largest group of gay and straight friends that we could rally. We will tell our friends that we are expecting our first child, and then we will tell them to make some fucking noise.

And we will be proud to be Gay, and proud to be a part of our community.

James

Yeesh. I'm getting goosebumps reading all of these letters. Prop 8 really is/was a galvanizing event -- it feels like the gay marriage cause has actually gained momentum because of it, instead of slowing down. Hopefully, in 2-3 years, gays will be better off with Prop 8 passing than they would have been had it failed.

I really hate it when gays capitalize Gay.

Contest: finish the post.

"...check out our registry for baby gifts and hand out tastefully-printed cards with the URLs of all the stores we've registered with. Win-win, really."

hey julie in chicago i said that exact same thing in the comment thread responding to tina's letter. i even used the word galvanizing. what's the deal?

but seriously, i feel like the way this is going we might all wind up patting a mormon on the back and saying 'thanks for the slam dunk asshole, couldn't have done it without you'.

I really hate it when people spell blaire with an e.

Blair with an e is a scrawny little alien-looking guy. Don't worry and his boy Sherman, you win.

Also these people sound fat.

Congratulations to the dads-to-be, but I hate the phrase "we are pregnant." Only the person actually doing the gestating is pregnant. I'm guessing neither James nor his partner is that person.

Why don't they move to Canada? Then the kid could get dual citizenship ... just sayin.

Dear James and Significant Other,

You (and your partner) are not pregnant, unless you're a rather oddly named lesbian. Your surrogate is pregnant. Your surrogate is having a baby. Your surrogate will push 8lbs of kid out of her va-jay-jay with her abdominal muscles alone.

Oh, and one more thing...congratulations & welcome to the Nelly Tribe.

I didn't know going gay pride was sterotypical. I go to pride to remember the fight people before us had endured, and the things it stands for. Thanks for joining into our little group James. hypocrite.

Whoops. So you did, douglas. Galvanize is the perfect word, though, no? Either that or it is/was a "we're mad as hell and we're not going to take it any more" moment.
