Slog Happy: There's Still Room for YOU to Read Your Crappy High School Poetry

Posted by Megan Seling on Thu, Nov 13, 2008 at 5:09 PM

We already have a great list of readers going for next week's Slog Happy of Shame, but there's still room for some of you who may be on the fence. So when you get home tonight, look through some of your old poetry/short stories/and collection of love letters you were never brave enough to actually send, and then e-mail me and say "Megan! I'll do it! I'll embarrass the fuck out of myself in front of my Slog peers!"

For all the rest of you who are too shy to share, but still want to be a part of the shame, join us this Wednesday, November 19th at Theatre Off Jackson. It starts at 6 pm and it's totally free.

See you there!

(And for those of you who think their writing is far too terrible to ever share with a room of strangers years after it was written, keep this in mind: the poem I currently plan on reading is called "I Hate You," and it's actually lyrics to a song I wrote for my imaginary band called Go Away Megan. Nothing is too terrible. We all have our secrets.)

Megan,

Did the lyrics go like this?

Just where is our future, the things we've done and said!
Let's just push the button, we'd be better off dead!
'Cause I hate you!
And I berate you!
And I can't wait to get to you!

The sins of all our fathers, being dumped on us — the sons.
The only choice we're given is how many megatons?
And I eschew you!
And I say, screw you!
And I hope you're blue, too.

We're all bloody worthless...

And the video!

C'mon, Megan, admit it: you wrote that song, and Paramount Pictures got a legal spankin' comin' to 'em! Am I right? Am I right?

I'm gonna see what I can do to make it to Slog Happy. I've got my diary from 6th grade somewhere down in the basement - includes weekly top 3 singles from American Top 40, and somewhere in there are self-penned lyrics to "Cookies and Coke" (to the tune of the Little Drummer Boy).

I keep forgetting to look through my journals for you. I know there's gold in there, I just know it. Someone remind me, my memory is shit.

I feel this way every month, but for this Slog Happy in particular I am so sad that I live in California.

Is Mortified getting any credit for the idea?

unfortunately, livejournal entries from 2000 are full of internet jargon and seem to fog up my 15 year old stupidity.

ive got an email sent out to see if anyone from a poetry collective i was involved in (yes. at 15.) still has mine. ha!!

i distinctly remember reading a poem about, basically, how i had no friends but was secretly a beautiful faerie, in front of my 10th grade english class and when i was done somebody asked "so... was that about a whore?".

Wish I could come... I embarrass myself here plenty, but I could have had some serious Hide-in-the-corner embarrasing shit from freshmen yr in college....a Song/Poem called Erroll Morris When I Miss You (about a loser girl (ME) who watches Erroll Morris films and eats Malai Kofta when she misses her Loser Man.. How VERY SAD.

It sucks hardcore that I can't make it to this. I have some seriously angsty LiveJournal stuff from senior year that would be amazingly terrible to read.

Turns out I'll be reading some of my early work, way way before I got paid for writing anything.

it will probably be abysmal ...
