Grant Barnhart's Dream Catcher (2008), acrylic on canvas, 48 by 60 inches

At OKOK. (Gallery site here.)

This painting is a portrait of the hard hit by Chuck Bednarik (whited-out, celebrating) that knocked out Frank Gifford cold in a 1960 Eagles-Giants NFL game—a hit that changed both of their lives. Barnhart paints it as a spiritual moment, a moment when something is transferred between bodies, an out-of-body situation. He's done it perfectly. It reminds me of this.

i've always been weary of sports as transcendence metaphors, but this one nails it.

@4 - Even more compelling at the opening, which was accompanied by the Garfield High drum line. Lots of noise.

Where are my fucking comments going?

For the longest time I looked at this trying to figure out why Howard The Duck was lying on his back.

Hardly worth waiting for, that one, was it?

Chuck Bednarik was also a husky Quaker.
