Anti-Smoking Nazis

Posted by Dan Savage on Thu, Nov 13, 2008 at 10:46 AM

A friend draws my attention to today's featured article on Wikipedia...

stupidnazis.jpg

But the article goes on to note that the Nazis anti-tobacco campaigns were pretty ineffectual:

The anti-tobacco movement did not have much effect in the early years of the Nazi regime and tobacco use increased between 1933 and 1939

So... liberal democracies are better at waging war on tobacco, fascist states are better at waging actual wars—or starting them.

Logic? Sample size? This can't generate any worthy discussion if it's a single comparison.

It's so refreshing to see an article talking about Nazis that talks about actual Nazis rather than just making a stupid analogy.

Hitler was a passionate vegetarian and advocate of the health-foof movement as well.

And that war on alcohol in the 20's worked out so well. Or the war on drugs that we've been waging for a gazillion years.

Why can't people who smoke cigars, have a special lounge to do so in WA state? Why can't an exemption for cigar bars be made?

Same for Hooka joints. Why can't they exist?

Why is it OK to smoke pot (illegal) around your kids (fucking stupid) but not OK to smoke tobacco (legal) in places where it is prudent (cigar or hooka lounges)?

THAT will never make freaking sense.

Well, when the party gives out official silver cigarette and cigar implements as part of ceremonies, of course it's not going to go well.

The Nazis had two big problems confronting their war on tobacco. First, this was before most of the real scientific evidence had come out about how bad smoking really is for you. Second, soldiers like them some cigarettes. It's hard to cut down smoking when an actual war is going on.

There was an anti-No Smoking sign lady at the Pike Place market this morning that was peeling all the No Smoking signs off the walls and no one said anything about it. Of course they will be put back up eventually, but she didn't have the logic skills to realize that.

The anti-smoking campaigners of the Nazis aligned themselves with the vegetarians and the Aryan nudists, which sort of limited their appeal to the masses. No nannies were harmed in the production of their advertisements, however.

interesting..."fascist states are better at waging actual wars—or starting them."

so dan you lean toward the fascists ...since you did advocate for the iraq war. I believe it was "The War on Iraq will make it clear to our friends and enemies
in the Middle East (and elsewhere) that we mean business: Free your people, reform your societies,
liberalize, and democratize... or we're going to come over there, remove you from power, free your
people, and reform your societies for ourselves. "

remember, 3 lefts make a right ... and you my friend have waaaay more in common with the right than you want to admit.

It tends to be difficult to convince soldiers not to smoke (because it might kill them) when you are requiring them to go places where people shoot at them.

The book you want to read is called The Nazi War on Cancer, by Robert Proctor.
