Yesterday we invited Slog readers to redesign the poster for this Saturday's marriage-equality rally and march. Here, for your perusal, are the redesigned posters we've gotten so far.

Despite my own entry here, it's Shawn's by a mile... Bravo. (Brava?)

Aside from the misspelling, the last one is the bomb.

James Price wins. Loses some points for MySpace, but still.

James wins. Doug's is not bad, except that the image of punching out a black dude is a little disturbing.

5
Yeah, the first and last.

I like James Price's, but I also like Andrew Caldwell's.. although that Purple is just too jarring for my eyes... that i would change.

The last one, definately.

Only the last one is better than the original.

James Price for the win. Lovely.

James Price has a good layout, but it needs a spell check and the letters are too far apart / the words are too close together.

Looking at Kristin Bell's a second time, it's kind of grossing me out. Two states tonguing each other? Get a room already!

Price's. Though, its hard to read. Typesetting, people. ALL Caps with tight leading = suck. Especially with the Q beating the C on the head. The bottom is a big block of sucks-to-read. But, I love the concept.

@8, @11. Agree with both of you.

I'm seeing a lot of the votes for the last one. It's nice, but it's so... 1985...
Posted by ask on November 12, 2008 at 3:28 PM

I vote for James, though it would be more effective if it were a cleaner "not equals" sign instead of the torn/paintbrush effect.

Kristin Bell needs to learn about PNG.

With the spelling fix and a sans serif font the last one is the best by far. Also props for ditching the utterly pointless facebook url. At least the myspace one has a slight chance of being remembered.

And please, kids, don't use JPG for something that calls for PNG. Thanks that is all.

HAHAHA. Am I the only one who got Doug Nellis's?!?!

I find the "If you can't join 'em.." picture disturbing. It is a direct commentary on the relations of the Black community and the gay community- with dangerous implications. It is far too aggressive and hostile. This is a time for soul searching and building bridges between our communities. This is not the appropriate message for such a time.

Agreed - Price FTW, even with the spelling problem.

There's a part of me that appreciates to commentary of Nellis' but it exacerbates the problem instead of fixing it. Sometimes irony is just not the way to go.

Isn't the photo from the top poster from old Seattle Mime Theater promos?

I'm pretty sure Doug Nellis's wasn't serious. He's poking fun at Dan & Eli.

Shawn! Shawn! Shawn!

jrrrl is correct. I wasn't serious. But I was disturbed by Dan and Eli's fixation on the racial breakdown of the Prop 8 vote, which is why their names are on my poster. The only people I intend to offend are those two.

I think this one and this one get the point across a bit better.

I like the graphicness of James Price's, but I don't think it's giving the right message with this combination of symbols. In fact, it's giving the opposite intended message. It's saying that non equality is American. If it was an equal sign knocking out the American flag, THEN it would make sense.
Posted by EmilyP on November 12, 2008 at 4:44 PM

I agree with #17. The last one wins, just fix the spelling and change the symbol so it's more clearly a "not equal to" sign. Also, is this just a protest against Prop 8? Does anyone give a rat's ass about Prop 102 in AZ and Amendment 2 in FL? Only about 23 million people affected by those two genius initiatives.

Is it fair to vote for someone when you sleep with them every night? Big Strong Shawn yay!

I don't know what Doug Nellis' intention was, but it definitely triggers me. The racial divisiveness is not funny. It polarizes communities of color from white people and paints a picture that people of color can't be queer or LGBTQ allies. I suggest Doug Nellis re-consider the actual effect of that ad because it comes off as fucking racist. The queer community in Seattle does not need to be more white-centric.

Sorry, but I don't understand Shawn Kavon's. Has this image appeared somewhere before? Is it about crossdressing? Charlie Chaplin? I'm baffled at the cheerleading for it ... please help me, someone.

I love Shawn's too!

@35 -- it makes more sense if you've seen the funny slog posts about the weird live theater ads from this summer (see http://slog.thestranger.com/2008/09/wait…)

gawd, i HATED that ad, but i sure love this one!

Huh ... when I first saw Doug's, it didn't occur to me that a white guy was punching a black guy. The race issue didn't come to mind at all until I read these comments.

I'm not sure why that first one is so amusing... the only thing I noticed was that he stole the image from the Seattle Performs - Live Theatre Week advertisements. I feel like I'm missing something...

Last one FTW... Simple, clean, gets the message across, good color choice. Some of the others just look gaudy, or like the work of your coworker who totally took an art class once and has the *perfect* idea for a poster.

I am confused at what you are trying to get at with the rocky poster...a white guy punching a black guy?? I think it blurs your message and is not very tactful.

Price wins.
The first one - feels like a private joke, and I'm not in on it. This kind of event needs to access something universal.

Wow - um ... as an African-American who has never been anti-gay, what I have heard, read, and seen since Nov. 4th has be saddening, disturbing, and enraging. It seems to just get worse every day. Now, the Rocky poster. Nice. Keep pushing. I'm getting farther and farther away.

Personally, I don't think any of these are better than the original. The last one is actually pretty cool from a design perspective but the message isn't as clear and obvious as the original.

I'm pretty baffled at the complaints you stirred up on the original poster. I say look again. I showed the original poster to my designer colleagues and we all instantly got the point as well as the concept of the "yellow brick road" (nice touch IMO!).

Again, I don't get the point of this "contest". But I do appreciate people contributing to a good cause. Which is all the original designer was trying to do as well. I hope the Saturday march is outstanding :)
