Homo Pissing Off All of the People All of the Time

I am truly grateful for your wisdom and wit, Dan Savage. I read your weekly column and listen to you whenever I can on Mahar or Colbert.

But last night on The Colbert Report you said, if I heard you right, that seniors were the group most responsible for the success of Prop 8 and we should take heart, because they’ll die soon.

I’m sure you went for the easy joke, but please say something somewhere that recognizes that we LGBT seniors are in your sights, too. We bear the heavy burden as pioneers and, too often, as the people who will go into the hostile and ignorant territory of nursing homes where the work must be done to make the last years bearable for us.

Again, thanks for all the good you do. Now do more for the elders in your community.—G.D.

As I recall, you also criticized bigots for supporting the measure. You know, Dan, bigots are people too, and some of them really just hate other races, but have no problem with gay people. I think you owe all racist bigots who voted No on 8 an apology for lumping them with homophobic bigots, who may or may not also be racist. It's just unacceptable that you willingly choose to censure an entire general group of people just because an enormous amount of them feel and vote a certain way.

Next time you go on TV, bring a list of every person who voted Yes on 8, and read it aloud, just so it's clear who exactly is at fault, and so nobody gets unfairly caught in the crossfire. I think that's the only reasonable way to approach the issue.

good lord. can't we recognize that there are groups that supported prop 8 at a higher rate than the average. those groups need to be targeted. not for death, but for outreach. that isn't hatin' on there. it's identifying a problem.

It is heartbreaking that the older pioneering gay generation be the ones who suffer. I for one see marriage for The Gays in the future, but how many older gays won't get to see all they worked toward.

I've used it before. I use it too much. I love Logan's Run. But the whole age 30 thing doesn't work in my favor, so I'd change it to 60.

I remember the time I caught the trolley over to the Brass Rail, which is what they used to call the Brass Connection in those days. s/he doesn't sound pissed off to me. she sounds a lot more reasonable that colbert in character, really.

progressive old people are rare gems, and they are usually that way because they have a personal stake in staying flexible and hip to current reality. like your mom, dan, and G.D. here. the ones we have to worry about are ones living in petrie dishes for old prejudices, the worst insular societies, like the LDS church. which i suppose informs the boycott.

Wow blaming random people with unchangeable physical characteristics for the passing of Prop 8 isn't turning out so well? WHO WOULD HAVE THOUGHT.

Damn, I tried blaming Prop 8 on the Irish and then on transexuals!!! And then I said we should just wait til they die!! Then they *both* got mad, WHATS UP WITH THAT? I can't win!!!

It's funny to watch bigots' heads explode. Tsk tsk.

@EmmiG: Are you about to tell us "old people" also don't exist or are not a meaningful statistical cohort? I'm curious.

It's a fact that younger generations tend to have "more liberal" ideals -- time and the deaths of old conservatives is largely credited for increasing civil rights for all groups.
