Simultaneously Fighting for Gay Marriage and Against the Stereotype About Gay Men and Good Design

Posted by Christopher Frizzelle on Tue, Nov 11, 2008 at 3:47 PM

protestflyer.jpg

(The headline above is Savage's joke. But seriously: if any designers—gay or straight—want to redesign this poster and send it to us, we'll put it up on Slog. If more than one designer takes this project on, great. We'll have a vote and send the best one to protest organizers to use in the future. These protests are going to keep happening, and for God's sake the posters should look good.)

What? They are just marching to the restroom.

it was obviously designed by a lesbian. if a gay man designed this poster, there wouldn't be any women on it.

No, no, it's one of those moving sidewalk, like in an airport. Also, gays have asymmetrical heads and pointy feet.

And for double god's sake get a real domain name, even if it just redirects. There's no copy and past on posters, and nobody's going to remember gid=35445293690.

@1 and @2: Hee! FWIW, I think the design is fine: I can read it, it has the right info on it, and I get it.

The cookie cutter cut-out look seems to be popular in gay oriented advertising...apparently, it's seen as non-threatening to nervous and hostile straights. it just makes me want to have a cookie.

Apparently they took their typographic cues from Eric here. Inappropriately wide leading? Why not?

To Mr. or Ms. Poster Designer... graphic design is obviously not your profession, but you saw the need, made the effort and put something out there. Good job, thanks for stepping up, and I'll see you on Saturday.

Why do they all have sloping heads?

#8 As you can tell - I can barely type - so what is the catty shit about - just your habit in dealing with people? I am going to work hard on building this event, hope you do the same, then offer your designing skills for free to all those who can use them for, underfunded/little time to get the work done, political actions. Deal?

@12- They were live-traced in Illustrator. If you're going to live-trace something, at least be sure to use a hi-res image.

Although it could benefit from a move beyond "restroom iconography", I'm actually disappointed over the slogans more than the poster design. This poster's "march for marriage equality" is good. "Stop the hate", which I've seen elsewhere, isn't. Even if we feel hated, the other side doesn't think of what they just did as hateful, and the "h-word" will just repel them. It just turns into an emotional us-versus-them screaming match that makes it even harder for them to identify with us.

Gosh--Why isn't Dan Savage complaining about the inclusion of Black figures in the poster design when they so horribly let down the California Queers and the Country?

At least the location and times are clearer than the scattered information flying about the Slog the past few days. Design--feh. Communication--succeeds. Verdict: Satisfactory.

I hope I don't have to be in a couple to turn up. I feel discriminated against in my singledom!

Is this the final and absolute schedule? I still have people emailing me to be at City Hall at 10:30. Others are asking if the confusion is some kind of ploy to make the march less effective. Could some one please post something about the schedule and which groups are on-board. I am afraid turnout will be low because of the confusion.

I can't possibly imagine why poster design is the issue worth discussing here.

@18, I found the info I requested below. I should read Slog from the bottom up.

Slog should always be read from the bottom up.

Slog should never be read, in any direction.

awh, come on - you can't count the text when judging the flyer design. The text was added post-release!

I'm just excited to see that the poster is being used. And really kids - lets discuss the *message*, not how much we want sugar cookies.

Assume that nobody knows where Volunteer Park is, and not everybody has web access. Not everybody has lived here forever... or even has a phone.
