Re: Simultaneously Fighting for Gay Marriage and Against the Stereotype About Gay Men and Good Design

Posted by Dominic Holden on Tue, Nov 11, 2008 at 4:07 PM

Here at The Stranger, ya know, we're not the organizers of the gay-rights movement--until we have a criticism of it. Then, from our desks, we'll show those volunteers how to do it right. Sure, they had less than a week and aren't getting paid; they're getting permits and booking speakers and designing posters and putting up posters. But that's not good enough, is it?

Personally, I could do without the restroom motif on the Prop 8 protest poster. But overall, the poster is pretty good—not great—but good. You can quickly see what the march is about, where it is, and when it is—which is more than we could say for most lefty rally/march posters. Look at some of this cluttered bullshit.

Thepot poster is actually good because of the identifiable highly graphic logo. We need one for gay marriage equal rights, too. How about a heart outline, like a valentine shape but just the outline, with a bold equals sign inside it? Appeals to broader unifying themes of love, commitment, equality etc. stuff everyone feels good about. Makes the whole issue appealing to traditional folks who value love and commitment and marriage....and euqality...so why shouldn't gays have that too? Seizes the high moral ground of love and equality. Hey love is even in the bible, too!! spreads the message of "we're just like you, this is aoubt our loving relationships, equality, etc. instead of "hey this is something for just this one minority group." Remember Hands Off Washington? The thumbprint inside ghostbusters? That graphic looked great, was simple, was graphic and said "hey this is about govt. harshness versus privacy" or even "hey this is about us washingtonians versus those californians taking over our politics up here" -- very unifying themes. What's more unifying than I heart you? Than equality for all? I rest my case. unity -- <} = {> =

How about a big greasy fist, with a wedding band on it.

I have an idea, at least for men: Gay friends of mine have a decoration from an old Valentine's party hanging up in their house. It is a heart outline made from red styrofoam. The concave point at the top of the heart is shaped into a dickhead.
