Don't Panic!: Slog Will Be Offline for 30 Minutes While We Make a Few Changes

Posted by on Tue, Nov 11, 2008 at 4:55 PM

In about 20 minutes (5:15 or so), Slog will be down so our hardworking tech team can update some behind-the-scenes stuff. It should be back online in about a half an hour (that'd be around 5:45) and it will look, for the most part, exactly the same. But the commenting function will be all new--it should be faster, better, and with a captcha to cut down on pesky spam. Hooray!

So when Slog disappears, don't panic. Just go watch the puppies for about 30 minutes. And when you come back, you'll see a new and improved Slog! (Sort of.)

Thank you for your patience while we continue to make Slog an enjoyable experience. We can't do it without you.

Sleeping puppies are never boring! The best part is when one sorta kinds wakes up, walks over to a brother or sister puppy, and flops on top of him or her. CUTE!

I lied. I don't care if Obama is behind the change. Captcha sucks. Mandatory preview sucks. Not having my name and e-mail address automatically populated sucks (is there a way to do this that I don't know about?).

This is not change I can believe in.

I'm using Firefox 3, and it no longer recognizes the name and e-mail address fields to pre-populate them for me. That sucks.

Also, I'm looking at a spinning "Please Wait..." thinkg under this "Your Comments" box (make that was looking at it; I had to reload the page to get back to a "preview" button).

Did you remove the two link limit?

test (three different URIs this time): foo, bar, baz.
Posted by Phil M on November 11, 2008 at 7:25 PM
46
Phil - I'm using Firefox too. Hmm. I guess I can go the Google Toolbar route. None of the three things is that big of a deal individually, but collectively the process is teh suck.
Posted by Julie in Chicago on November 11, 2008 at 7:28 PM
47
Blockquotes aren't rendering any differently than regular paragraphs. Is that normal on the Web site? I've been using a feed reader for Slog for ages.

Help! Comment feeds no longer work (or are no longer computed by appending "-c.xml" to post URLs).TEST
Posted by Phil M on November 11, 2008 at 7:28 PM
48
Wait, Captcha is gone? Does it go away after you comment a few times?
Posted by Julie in Chicago on November 11, 2008 at 7:29 PM
49
Also, I used the "edit comment" thing to add "TEST" to the last comment, then used it again to remove the "TEST", and apparently the second edit didn't stick.

And if I browse back after the comment preview page, I get a spinner instead of the preview button. That sucks.

For 441 years from the founding of the City, the Romans were satisfied with the use of whatever water they drew from the Tiber, from wells, or from springs. To this day springs are revered for their sanctity, and their water is thought to bring health to sick bodies. One thinks of the ancient springs of the Camenae, of the ..., and of Juturna. There are now, however, nine aqueducts from which water converges into Rome. These are named Appia, Anio Vetus, Marcia, Tepula, Julia, Virgo, Alsietina (which is also called Augusta), Claudia, and Anio Novus.

Gidge: I e-mailed the following to Megan earlier:

Date: Wed, 12 Nov 2008 10:46:22 -0800
From: me
Subject: Slog: RSS feeds (both posts and posts' comments) screwed
To: Megan Seling - The Stranger

Hi, Megan.

I've been watching the Slog adjustments since yesterday afternoon (a little too closely, it seems, as I'll never see another meat grinder the same).

Others seem to be covering the new comment posting stuff pretty well (CAPTCHA *every* time is too much, Firefox [and others?] no longer recognize fields in order to pre-fill them, edits don't stick, browsing back wreaks havok), but I wanted to bring to your attention the fact that RSS feeds don't work now.

The main feed: shows the latest post to be "County Budget Cuts Are Going to Hurt" (2008-11-11 16:02).

Until yesterday's changes, I could append "-c.xml" to any post's URL in order to arrive at the URL for an RSS feed of comments for that post. Since then, requests for those feeds result in a 404 error from your HTTP server. For instance, was valid 24 hours ago, but is not now.

Please, oh, please don't make us repeatedly reload a Web page in order to follow comments. It's just not practical compared to using a feed reader to drag a post over to my feeds column, adding "-c.xml", then seeing a nice list of which comments I've read or not read in the same layout as the bajillion other feeds I follow.
Posted by Phil M on November 12, 2008 at 11:40 AM
105
After posting, the sort order of comments reverts to default (oldest first). Yuck.

URIs enclosed in "angle brackets" (less than and greater than symbols) as they should be when including one in plain text (per W3C recommendation [1]) results in them being removed. For example:

* without angle brackets: http://example.com/
* with angle brackets:

Not many people are aware of this recommendation (see relevant discussion on Brad Templeton's blog [2]), but if you're not going to allow HTML in comments, you should deal with plain text appropriately.
