Don't Make Me Turn This Slog Happy Around!

Posted by on Tue, Nov 11, 2008 at 11:00 PM

Okay, okay, we get it! You hated the captcha and change is the worst thing in America unless it's coming from Obama. But please, children, behave. If you want to test out the new comment feature on Slog, please do so here in this open thread. And let's be nice about it, okay?

Don't test the comments in another post, unless you have something specific to say about that post. Let's at least try to stay on topic elsewhere.

So post some comments and see how you like it. And if you have any problems, questions, and/or constructive criticism about the changes, feel free to e-mail me at megan@thestranger.com. We want you to enjoy Slog, really, we do! But this is not a sandbox. Let's play nice.

Please? And thank you. I'd hate to have to take away your Slog Happy privileges.

Posted by idaho on November 11, 2008 at 11:15 PM

@19 The reason it was slower earlier in the evening was because of a small glitch that happened in during the update. The tech boys caught it and fixed it. So it'll be nice and fast from now on.

I got a 1963 GE toaster this weekend, as well as a two burner hot plate in the original box from Sears. Not to mention a great RCA Victor alarm clock, a very Jane Mansfield-esque punchbowl, and some great Montovani albums.

I did pass up a Lady Kenmore Blender. Do you think that was a mistake? I mean, I have a million blenders, but I didn't think the Lady Kenmore brand was ever used for small appliances. Gosh, i'm conflicted....

Look. Two issues. One: I spent a few minutes formulating out a well-thought revision of my post which disappeared into the ether. Only my original post showed up. Lame.
Two: The "revise comments" field is half covered in ads, forcing me to type blindly without seeing what I'm writing. Also lame.
I'm not anti-change, but did you test this new system out At All before introducing it? I mean, did you test it on different platforms, using different browsers, etc? Putting such an untested system in place just makes you look like dirty hippies.

If Megan's post is confusing, it's about me and Mr. Poe and Bellevue Ave going a little nuts last night. All HTML was enabled so we had a party in a couple comment threads with some music and flash and animated gifs and other weird html. Megan caught us and cleaned up after us. I'm guessing they're working to get bold and blockquotes back once they us-proof it. Thanks Megan!

Q*bert is harassed by an assortment of enemies. "Coily" the snake appears at the top of the pyramid inside a purple ball, bouncing toward the bottom of the screen. Once he hits the bottom row of cubes, the snake springs out from inside, hopping around in pursuit of the little orange protagonist. Red balls also appear at the top of the pyramid, bringing bouncing death if they collide with Q*bert on the way down.

Okay, pros and cons of the new system.

PROS:
1. Slightly faster comment posting (IF you ignore the time used to load and fill out the preview page).
2. No accidental triple posting.
3. ...
4. Profit?

CONS:
1. No HTML. EPIC FAIL.
2. No cookies or whatever to remember commenter's name and email address. EPIC FAIL.
3. Mandatory preview page.
4. Name and email address fields switched in order from before. Confusing for regular commenters who used the old system a lot.
5. No URL box for name linking.
6. Too much gray space between comments.

Megan, it's not change per se to which many people object, but the fact that, all too frequently by "change" what people really mean is, "we just threw a bunch of shit at the wall to see what would stick, without really putting much thought into whether or not these changes would actually IMPROVE the object or system being changed".

Change that makes something BETTER than it was before = GOOD

Change that completely FUBAR's something that was already working pretty well (at least from the user-end)= STOOPID

re: #199

The 1st link replaced the comments page with the link (which sucks), but the 2nd link opened a new tab in the main window (which I like).

I don't know why that is (I suck at linking), but they should keep the latter and ditch the former. At least it remembers my email now, and editing is easier.

#202 - i prefer the links to open in another window or tab too, but all i'm doing is typing in the addresses. maybe i need to include the http so they will open in another tab - an experiment:

Hey guys, you can calm down about the html and link issues. You can tell they're slowly transitioning to something like the Mercury's comment system. Hopefully. That means user registration and avatar images and html and links and even profiles where you can add Slog friends. It's pretty cool. I think they needed to make these changes that don't look like a big deal to us to make the foundation of the new system. Or maybe they just wanted to get rid of our blockquotes.
Posted by jrrrl on November 12, 2008 at 10:32 AM

#202 - apparently stranger links will open in the same comments window, but other sites will open in a new tab or window. at least they are for me.

@203 - 205:

Totally inconsistent. Some of the urls open in new tabs (in Chrome) while some open in the comments tab; but using the http or www prefixes don't seem to have any relevance in terms of which open where.

Asteria, following any of the sample links you provided results in my browser (Firefox 3.0.3 on GNU/Linux) doing *precisely* what it should do any time I follow a link -- opens in in the current window/tab. Slog: If I want to open a link in a new tab/window, I'll middle-click or shift-click, or choose "open in new window" from a context menu. *Please* don't break this long-standing WWW convention.

@209:

I ALWAYS take town cars home from Sea-Tac; they're the same price as a cab, and no waiting in the stinking taxi line with the other plebes. Besides, I love to see the look on people's faces when that black , tinted-window sedan pulls up at the END of the taxi line, and you step in, like you're somebody important!

I'm not of course, just smart. But, that counts for something...
