Press (and Mutt) Lover

Posted by on Fri, Nov 7, 2008 at 12:37 PM

As Dan wrote, we now have a president-elect who can string together entire sentences. Obama's press conference today also proves that we have a president-elect who, you know, actually holds press conferences. Taking questions. From the press.

It wasn't particularly hardball but there were good questions: Has anything you've seen in your security briefings in the last few days given you pause about what you said during the campaign? (He said he couldn't answer based on the fact that what he's learned is classified information.) Did you respond to the happy-election note Mahmoud Ahmadinejad sent you? (No, along with a repeat of the belief that Iran developing a nuclear weapon is "unacceptable.") (What would Emily Post say about answering this card?)

And then, of course, there was the question that Obama answered with the words, "This is a major issue."

The dog question.

The Obamas want a shelter dog (specifically a "mutt like me," Obama said), but Malia is allergic. The search is ongoing—just like the family's pending decision on whether to enroll the girls in private or public school.

Signing off.

They should adopt a greyhound. They are supposed to be good for people with allergies and there always seem to be lots of them in Chicago rescue groups because of the dog tracks in WI -- though, those might be more retired racers and they want a puppy.

I think going through a dog rescue is the best way to go. Poodles are great dogs (I have a standard!) for people with allergies. And goodness knows there are lots of rescue organizations. I'm hoping they send the girls to the private school that employs my brother. That would be sweet!

Intelligent, articulate, sense of humor - I still can't believe he actually got elected! I'm still deliriously happy. That said, I though he looked tired and worried already.

Speaking of lovers, am I right that Mr. Poe goes for Rahm Emmanuel?

What was that Nancy Reagan quip about Séances about? I think he meant Hillary having Séances about Eleanor Roosevelt. He should apologize to Nancy.

Vizslas are great family dogs and good for people with allergies, but good luck finding one in a shelter. @7: Who doesn't? Le sigh.

"John McCain! Dead! Karl Rove! Dead! George W. Bush! Dead!" "Rahm" means "heavy cream" in German.

Speaking of presidents that can put together whole sentences, how about presidents that can kick ass! A customer just came up to me and I noticed that she rented "Air Force One", where Harrison Ford is a total badass American President. It made me ponder...could Barack Obama be that kind of badass president? Answer: you bet you're ass!

ha ha! #11 you bet you are ass? sorry that made me laugh! I agree though - he does put out badass vibes! We are all counting on him being a great man. It has been so long since the country felt this kind of hope. And what timing!

Badass? Perhaps none of you have noticed what an amazing dork our new president is. I have great hopes of him, and for all of dork-kind. Seriously... have you seen the picture of him on a bicycle?

Uh, the Obamas aren't deciding between public and private schools. They're deciding between private schools.

Actually, and I can't believe I have devoted this much thought to this, but I think a poodle is not a good dog for a Democratic President. Conservatards already think he's a latte-drinkin', arugula-eatin' liberal. Their heads would explode if he got a poodle. In fact, that line of thinking rules out a bunch of other dogs that are supposed to be good for allergies -- Bichons, Yorkies, Maltese, Shih Tzu. They should get a Doberman. Specifically, this one (it's in Chicago and everything).

Schnauzer or wheaten terrier would be my pick.

A Rottweiler just to bait the Repubs into saying something racist. All those Obama rumors are looking kind of silly now: http://tinyurl.com/6jb7l6

Why on earth would the first black president send his young children to public school? The notion itself is preposterous. They should go to school underground, in Dick Cheney's old bunker. Jeezus! Arf, she said.

Hmm.. this report says Obama does NOT want a shelter dog, because they are "mostly mutts, like me". Context is key. http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/worldnews/article-1084007/Most-shelter-dogs-mutts-like-Obama-defies-political-correctness-press-conference.html

I love that he called himself a mutt! I've called myself that for years and I'm glad to have a president in office that I can relate to in that regard. And a president who will joke about it in a press conference. I love Obama. I fucking love our new president.

The Obamas have absolutely no intention of enrolling their daughters in the DC public schools. If you aren't stupid, you know that he's just saying that to appear politic. And if you are stupid, I'll give you 2-to-1 odds on the bet.

Bad summary of a great press conference.... most directly, he said they needed a hypoallergenic breed and wanted to adopt from a shelter BUT shelter dogs tend to be mutts like him implying they need a purebred from a shelter.... in no way did he say they want a mutt. Free journalism at its finest.

dc public schools are freaking terrible. i grew up seven miles outside the city, and no family i know with the money to send their kids to private school sent their kids to the public schools there. i don't blame the obamas at all.
