This just in from Utah Democrat Katherine:
I'm going to the Prop. 8 protest with my family tonight in downtown Salt Lake City, next to the biggest, fattest LDS temple. I want to make as many protest signs as possible, but I'm so enraged that I'm having trouble coming up with pithy stuff to put on them. (I drove by the temple this afternoon while picking my son up from school and saw dozens of Mormon brides parading across the street to Temple Square. I could hardly drive in a straight line after that.)Might Sloggers have any ideas?
I wrote back and told her Sloggers will have nothing but ideas. Please make good on my promise in the comments.
My best bet: A group sing of "Take the M out of Mormon and it's moron," sung to the tune of the Motels' "Take the L Out of Lover (And It's Over)".
(Also: "Keep your cult out of our culture wars!" and, of course, "FUCK YOU, BIGOTS!")
Can't think of a slogan, but it seems like a cult that got kicked out of Illinois back in the nineteenth century because of their deviant sexual practices might be a little more cautious about casting stones. The Mormons are pushing anti-gay laws to get credibility from the larger Christian establishment. Polygamy is the LDS Church's greatest PR disaster, so what better way to distance themselves from it and get respect from other evangelical nutjobs than to mandate "traditional" marriage for everyone? Mitt Romney probably would have run against Barack Obama except many Christians had a problem with his religion. The more respect they get from Protestants and Catholics, the more money and power they get. I think bringing attention to their polygamist roots might be a good idea to help make their plan backfire...
I do however believe that marriage is ordained of God and should only be between a man and a woman.I know the point you're trying to make is about hate, but let's stop right there. Please remember that whether you think marriage is "ordained of God" or "ordained of a magic snake" it makes no sense to write laws based on that belief. In this country we're not supposed to write one person's (or many people's) mythological beliefs into law.
I do not know a mormon who hates anyone because of their sexual orientation.Got it. No hate, just the desire to prevent people from marrying each other. Very loving of you.
I maintain that I have as much a right to believe the way I do as you have a right to believe the way you do.I agree. However, people are now writing your and their bigoted beliefs -- those which you have every right to hold -- into law. That's bad.
