Urine is Sterile

...so this occurance reported by Hot Tipper Jessica is nowhere near as bad as what happens annually to bike seats at this. But still:

When I was walking out of the Olympic Athletic Center towards Ballard Ave around 8:40 pm, I saw a homeless man standing strangely close to a locked-up bike. Once I walked closer, I noticed that he was drenching the middle section of the bike (including the seat) with his pee stream. Bummer. Maybe I should have left a note for the owner.

Dear Jessica: Thank you for noticing and sharing.
Everyone else: Should Jessica have left a note for the bike's owner?

She should have kicked the bum in the balls.

Urine is only sterile if the person doesn't have a urinary tract infection. And people who are malnourished are more likely to have those sorts of opportunistic infections. I recommend a breed ban on Homeless.

Whatever happened to direct action? Why did she not yell "Hey asshole, stop pissing on that bike!"? she could have done it from a safe distance. There were probably other people around. If she had left a note would she have written "homeless person", "bum", "asshole" or something else? The fact that she did nothing then wrote in because she felt a residual guilt is very strange.

How I miss passive-agressive Seattle life; here in Chicago nobody would have written anything to anyone to ease their conscience. The bum would have been completely ignored, unless it was a messenger's bike, whereupon the first messenger to notice would have promptly kicked the bum in his back as he rode by.

@3 -- I strongly suspect the allegedly homeless man WAS engaging in "direct action" toward a particular offending cyclist no longer in the field of view.

What? No option for "let the poor slob find out on his own when the smell of pee hits his nose" ?

I don't think you need to leave a note - the urine will advertise its presence quite effectively.

I would leave a note but only if he pooped on the bike. The note would say "Have a nice day!"

@9 for the win. But, seriously, whoever owns that bike needs to relube the chain. Pee'll corrode the shit out of it...
