Trump advisor has Al Baldesaro clarified comments he made back in July that Hillary Clinton should be shot for treason, for her email scandal and the handling of the 2012 attack on the US consulate in Benghazi. The co-chair of Trump's veterans' coalition says that the "liberal media" misconstrued his comments and said he wanted her assassinated.

Here are Baldesaro's original comments, on conservative radio show "The Kuhner Report":

“I’m a veteran who went to Desert Shield, Desert Storm. I’m also a father who sent a son to war, to Iraq, as a Marine Corps helicopter avionics technician. Hillary Clinton, to me, is the Jane Fonda of the Vietnam,” Baldasaro replied, referring to Fonda’s 1972 trip to Hanoi that some Americans consider to be an act of betrayal.

“[Clinton] is a disgrace for the lies that she told those mothers about their children that got killed over there in Benghazi. She dropped the ball on over 400 emails requesting back up security. Something’s wrong there,” he continued.

“This whole thing disgusts me,” Baldasaro added. “Hillary Clinton should be put in the firing line and shot for treason.”

The Secret Service said in July that they would launch the "appropriate investigation" into Baldesaro's statement, and even the Trump camp distanced themselves from the remarks.

And here's what the Republican told MassLive today:

It's unclear just which "liberal media" Baldesaro is referring to in his comments to MassLive. We dug around and even US Weekly originally reported on the remarks as a call for execution. (Fuuuuuck this election is dark.) We have to assume it's anyone who's not this guy?

Baldesaro's clarification underscores the nasty, dangerous undercurrent of violence running through this election. There was Donald Trump's threatening Second Amendment "joke" last week, and the constant monitoring of Hillary Clinton's health feels like another way to wish illness and death upon her for her perceived wrongdoings.

Makes you long for the halcyon days when we just called for impeachment.
