A black woman says she was physically attacked by a group of white men at the intersection of 31st Street and Jackson Street along Frink Park around 5 p.m. on Tuesday. She says she had just gotten off a bus with her six-year-old son.

Reports of her claim went viral on Twitter and Facebook on Wednesday, leading to some speculation that the attack was fake. SPD took to Twitter to solicit information about the alleged attack, which they "weren’t able to confirm or corroborate" at the time, Seattle Police Department public information officer Sergeant Sean Whitcomb told The Stranger.

According to Whitcomb, after making a public appeal for information about the attack, investigators were able to find the victim who made an official report. She requested that SPD not release her name so she could maintain her privacy.

"Social media made it seem like there was a roving group of people who had committed multiple crimes. As far as we know, this is the only report," said Whitcomb.

SPD detectives are investigating the attack as a possible hate crime. They are not releasing details about the attackers at this time.

Anyone with information is encouraged to call 911.
