Giovanna āGiĆ³ā Arrivoli was an up-and-coming Neapolitan Camorra crime boss āĀ and a trans man. Assigned female at birth, Arrivoli lived his truth, found a girlfriend, and ran drugs out of a coffee shop called the Blue Moon. How did the other mobsters in Camorra feel about him? They "respected Arrivoliās gender reassignment," according to a report in the Daily Beast. Unfortunately for Arrivoli... the news doesn't stop there. Arrivoli either ran up debts he couldn't pay or he was complicit in a betrayal ā and that's why Arrivoli is dead now, executed by mobsters who respected his gender identity in the worst possible way:
The 41-year-old [was] tortured and shot last week, allegedly by rival Camorra gang members. The killers employed the usual devices saved for male murders, including days of torture, the breaking of Arrivoliās jaw (presumably to get the victim to talk) and three fatal gunshots: two to the heart and one to the brain. Then Arrivoli was buried head first in the ground, a sign that the killing was likely a vengeance act for betrayal, according to local media reports quoting police sources.... The Camorra is surprisingly open when it comes to accepting trans individuals among their ranks and rivals. [Mafia] thugs do kill women, and children, too, but the rituals are generally different, and they almost never physically torture them, according to Roberto Saviano, a Mafia author who is living under police protection for his book Gomorrah, about the Neapolitan Camorra. It would appear that the Camorra clans also respected Arrivoliās gender reassignment, which is something trans Italians struggle with in almost every other sector of society.
I'm guessing Arrivoli might've preferred a little less respect for his gender identity at the end. But... um... gee. Props to the Camorra crime bosses, I guess, and here's hoping every other sector of Italian society is as progressive and accepting of trans men and women as the Italian mob.
